Re: EVO Full Root & OTA ROOT|Recovery|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing| for n00b's + Vide

All went well until I got to 5z and when I ran
/data/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

it said error opening /sdcard/recovery.img: No such file or directory.

I tried checking that directory through the shell, and there is indeed nothing even close to that file name. What am I missing?

I'm just starting the process now but based on the error you got and what you said there are two strong possibilities:
1) You didnt unzip the recovery.img to your card
2) You are not connected correctly via the USB, it must be Charge only with USB debugging enabled

Does that help?

EDIT:I tried my damnedest to unroot my phone but ironically I couldn't! LOL, it's locked in root, cant go back to Stock atm

Thanks!

noob question alert !!

But if we never had root and have OTA - we would have to do section 5, i get that.. but does this have FULL root ? Or do we do section 5 (to get past the OTA issue) first then follow your FULL root guide on the 1st page?

Maybe someone in this thread can help me out.
I wrote this tutorial in a hurry, so I understand that there may be some things I can improve. The steps are all there and accurate, but it seems like I'm missing something because I keep getting questions that I thought were answered.

In the FAQ, the 1st question is
Q. I did the OTA 1.47.651.1 can I still root my phone?
A. Scroll down and follow the steps in ****ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1****

The section is called -****ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1****

In the description I wrote -
This is for Root access after someone has applied the OTA 1.47.651.1. If you accepted the OTA or it was done for you when you bought your phone, use this guide.

I specifically said -
If it says "1.47.651.1" this guide is for you.
If you're on version "1.32.651.1" or "1.32.651.6" then use the ****ROOTING Part I and Part II (Full Root)**** instructions in section 1 & 2 of the first post.

So what can I write to make it abundantly clear that anyone w/ OTA 1.47.651.1 needs section 5 to Root their phone.

I don't think its needed but since sweethip asked maybe specifically say that this is a Full root method?

I have an issue w/ the whole Root vs Full-Root terminology.
What people refer to as "Root" is really just partial access. It was acceptable when we didn't have full-access available. It was better than nothing. Now that full Nand access is available, I'd like to get rid of the whole "Full-root" terminology.

However, in an effort to stop the overflow of my PM box, I'll concede and make the change...

The section is now called -

Re: EVO Full Root & OTA ROOT|Recovery|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing| for n00b's + Vide

when i do step 5M, i get this:

visit http://bit.ly/ad0pRn in the EVO Internet browser app
refresh that page or reopen it
/sdcard/part1: cannot create /data/app-cache/com.android.browser/BEC48C17295CAF9
F550BCD500A0A6F03
/data/app-cache/com.android.browser/DE25D64D198E4BF84672045F0EAEE6CE
/data/app-cache/com.android.browser/EAFCD74DF11E57A3571B1E4D0B768134/foo: directory nonexistant
reboot and run part2

after this, i did 5O and P and it seemed to do it correctly so i did 5Q and i just cant get past the "part 2 is scanning"

EDIT: got past this step finally. it seems USB debugging had turned off somehow. so yea... on to the next one.
