Some help please.

Getting stuck on 5I. Not getting message to restart the phone. Not sure what's going on. Total noob here, but the directions seem simple enough. Any help, ideas?

5Q) While the phone is booting up, on your keyboard hit the "UP" arrow key until you see the "adb-windows shell /data/local/part2" you typed in 5K. Once you see that, hit enter.

If you get a message that says "error: device not found" do it again. "UP" arrow once and hit enter. Keep doing this while the phone is booting up until you get a message that says "part 2 is scanning." This will not work until your phone connects to the pc. You have a very short window from the time it connects until it passes the "HTC" welcome screen. I just kept entering it over and over until it worked. I actually entered it 10x's before the phone actually connected and the command worked.

Alternately, if you have sounds enabled on your pc, you'll hear when the phone connects again and you can enter the code once it connects, but you have a small window of time.

If you miss your window, then it will just sit at the "part 2 is scanning" for a long time and your phone will go to the home screen.
Just power off the phone, and start again from this step. Remember to enter the code over and over while the phone is booting up.

But all I get is part 2 scanning?

Sorry, I don't know how else to explain this. I just know you have to enter that command after the phone connects but before it passes the "HTC" screen.
Like I mentioned, I started entering the code as soon as the screen came up. I entered it 10x's before the phone connected and it worked.

Also, the very 1st time I did this, I skipped 5O) In the address bar of your phone's browser, on the far right, is the refresh icon. (Looks like 2 arrows in a circle) Hit refresh.
And it didn't work. I had to start over.

I also know some people will try to skip the initial factory reset in 5D.

Bottom line, this process works. I mean I had full-rooted phone that I returned to stock then did the OTA just to make sure it worked. If I were you, I would start from 5A and try again. There's no rush for any step except 5Q. Everything else can be done slowly.

Are you able to get 5H to work? After you type "adb-windows shell" do you get a "$" prompt?

If not, did you extract evo-recovery.zip to the c: drive?

Yes, I got the $ prompt to show. Everything went as planned except for the message asking to restart my phone.

After I type sh /sdcard/part1, nothing happens. Just another $ prompt.

You have USB Debugging turned on?
Menu>Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging

i got all the way to here and it says permission denied..

5S) /data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

im a week old n00b to android coming from a tp2..so bear with me lol. if there is 1 error or anything throughout all of these steps do I have to start all over? I get all the way through even on step 5Q (even though i was stuck there for an hour) but now I'm stuck at the permissions denied section. Any help would be great.

For both of you, I have the same recommendation.
Re-download the Rooting OTA files.zip that's attached to the post, and make sure you're file sizes match what I have in the picture attached to the post.

Seems to me a file is corrupt. There is no need to start from the beginning. If you made it past 5Q, you're almost there. Just copy the files over to your sdcard again, and start from the step you're currently stuck on.

ill try this tomorrow. over at xda I was reading that I may have to unmount the sd card? then there was a bunch of commands but I'm still clueless to all this. thanks alot for your help and tutorial ill check back after i try your suggestion.
