re: EVERYTHING EVO - Rooting | NAND | Flashing Roms | Wipe
Ok, I have a couple questions.
1- I see you guys are saying I need to flash ROM/Radio/Wimax to use Froyo. I used the 2.2 deodexed rom and everything seems to be fine.i also downloaded the radio and wimax but did not flash those. Everything seems to be fine but am I missing something Im not aware of and need to flash the radio and wimax now? 2-I know you guys said I can recover and flash without my laptop now, but I still see a lot of instructions showing you having to use the "Run" box on your computer. Is there a detailed "how-to"on flashing without a computer? I really want to try out some roms today but don't want to mess anything up. I have read and searched a lot on here and xda, but don't think I fully understand yet. I just want to know as much about it as I can before I dive in. Thanks FastRX8- I basically need a "backup/flashing for Android noobs" like what you have done with this thread for rooting. I can't wait until I understand Android like I do Winmo.....

Check the instructions for naming again and the file size against the pics Fast has on Post #2. Quote:
Do you have 4G in your area? That seems to be the biggest hiccup for folks who are not running the latest versions. The only thing you may need your computer for is to load the ROM files onto your SD card and even that may not be needed if the Chef has included his ROM in ROM Manager which allows you do dl some ROMS Over The Air. Once the ROM is on your card you can use Quick Boot to jump into Recovery. Backup (if you want), wipe and flash. No computer needed for most of the steps. Fast does have flashing and backup instructions on Post #2. Section 3 and 4 discuss backing up and restoring. He covers flashing within the root instructions but Step 5AA is an example.

Done. I added a note at the beginning of the 1st post regarding rooting and using SimpleRoot. While I agree that it is the easiest method, the only issue I have is that it doesn't teach you anything. You get a rooted phone, but you still have the stock rom. That will cause problems. You don't know how to do a nandroid backup, that will also cause problems. I went ahead and posted the links to the different SimpleRoot methods though, since this is a stickied thread and I'd like people to find what they need quickly.

You could also just start over and watch the video for the No PC method. It shows every single step. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzEot2oYKbw Quote:
Then you can take a look at the tutorial for backup/restore or flashing a rom. Use Section 4 - Manual Nand Backup/Restore Use quick boot to get to recovery and then start from step 4C. Step 2Q in section 2 tells you how to install a custom rom. Basically, you put the zip file on your storage card and select "Flash zip from sdcard" on the recovery screen. These are also shown in the videos.

re: EVERYTHING EVO - Rooting | NAND | Flashing Roms | Wipe
OK, awesome man!! I appreciate your quick response. It just seems too easy, much easier than WinMo,and so far Android has been much more complicated than Winmo. Winmo I d/l'ed a rom, ran the RUU, click next a few times, and bam, new ROM up and running. Now though, if I can download a few roms on my laptop, transfer them to my sd card, then unplug my phone and leave the house. Then, at any time, I can run Quick Boot, backup, then flash a new rom when ever/where ever I want. That is soo awesome and gets me sooo excited!! I love Android more and more every post i read!!

re: EVERYTHING EVO - Rooting | NAND | Flashing Roms | Wipe
stang-I know the feeling. I myself was well versed in WinMo and felt lost as hell in the beginning. Once you get past the learning curve I think you'll find Android very easy.
Just an FYI-find a ROM you like, set it up ENTIRELY as you like it and back that up. Then you know you always have that to fall back on and you dont HAVE to backup before every flash. You always can, but dont have to. Remember the backup is a complete copy of your ROM, not a way to transport data/settings. For that you'll want to get a program like Titanium backup from the Market. There's a small learning curve with that as well but it's great for backing up/restoring apps, email, Sense settings, etc. Once you shed your Droid n00b status you can pull your data.img from your nand and use THAT to restore all your data. OMJ talks about it HERE The Android SDK OMJ mentions is not required to enjoy the hell out of your device but it is a great tool for going "behind the scenes". I've only scratched the surface with it. Fast's Thank button is working now, just hit any of them, or more than one-he deserves it fo sho! |
