Re: [TUTORIALS] EVO Full Root|OTA Root|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing|for n00b's + vide

Ok guys I'm back and I'm getting there but just one thing.

I got the 5N error...OK no problem. Went to post 2, did the instructions but now I'm getting a "cd: bad substitution" error that I can't get past.

Searched for a solution but no luck. Who's got me?

I would ASSUME it's just an error in the code you are typing. Where/when exactly are you getting this?

Right after I type the "cd /data/data/com.androi....." command. When I hit enter (after I refresh the internet browser on my phone) I get "cd: bad substitution". From the instructions I gather I should be getting a code beginning with a "B" or something to that effect.

Well while I have gone through the pre- and post- OTA root methods I did not encounter the dreaded 5M/N error.
I searched the thread that the fix is from and got zero results on "cd: bad substituiton".
Check the exact post/thread if you haven't and see if anything jumps out at you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=234

So you type all this out:
cd /data/data/com.android.browser/flashlite
mv sharedobjects sharedobjects-
ln -s /data/app-cache/com.android.browser/ sharedobjects
cd /app-cache/com.android.browser
ls

And it doesnt generate the correct directory? You should only be trying to refresh the browser page and then run just the ls code again if you dont get the deisred result.
It does say if you dont get the correct result to basically try again. I'm sure you have.
Sorry that's all I got. Fast has gone through that error, he may be able to shed some light.

You are the SH!T!!! Unfortunately I'm still stuck here. Yes I typed, not copy and paste. I've pretty much done it, oh I don't know maybe 10-15 times and my result is the same every time. Your help is STELLAR and it's much appreciated. Guess I'll hve to keep retracing my steps or maybe it's just the phone!!! lol

Thanks. If you really get stuck you could try the Simple Root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
That is simply the automated version of these steps. This is the best way to learn IMO.
If your issue is something YOU are doing, then that should help you out.
If your issue is device/setup/system related then Simple Root might run into the same wall as you

Simple root seems like it will work if you're not rooted yet but it still didn't work for me! I'm on the 1.47........build because when I flashed OMJs v1.7 rom1 it put me to that build! Now my screen messes up and I'm trying to get back to stock but can't! Does me being on 1.47......have anything to do with me not being able to unroot?!

Re: [TUTORIALS] EVO Full Root|OTA Root|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing|for n00b's + vide

Hey Winmonewbie Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I have another question. Now that I have done the titanium backup, once I install the rom that you recommended, how will I access my titanium backup? Will I stop receiving that notification from Sprint to install the OTA?

Thanks again. I love the benefits of rooting but I just don't understand much of the process.
