Done. I added a note at the beginning of the 1st post regarding rooting and using SimpleRoot. While I agree that it is the easiest method, the only issue I have is that it doesn't teach you anything. You get a rooted phone, but you still have the stock rom. That will cause problems. You don't know how to do a nandroid backup, that will also cause problems. I went ahead and posted the links to the different SimpleRoot methods though, since this is a stickied thread and I'd like people to find what they need quickly.

First, I haven't updated to any of the OTA updates. Still running 1.32.651.1.
I started going through the steps this morning to fully root my EVO. First set of steps (all prep and steps 1A through 1G) completed successfully. I get the "#" if I run "c:\evo-recovery\adb-windows shell."

Then I started the 2nd set of instructions. Now, I don't know where I screwed up, but now after I type in all the stuff and get to the bootloader screen in step 2F it never asks me if I want to update. It just finishes reading the PC36IMG.zip file and goes back to the original bootloader screen.
Now, I know I accidentally tried to do "Recovery" too early. I accidentally skipped from step 2H to step 2L and ran recovery after that reboot. The two dialogue boxes threw me off.
So I tried to go back and rename the PC36IMG.zip file to eng-PC36IMG.zip and use the Terminal Emulator per step 2K, but after I hit enter after the last line I get a bunch of text about "skipping write block," etc.
That's where I'm stuck. Any help? Is there any way to just start over? Thanks will be given.

You're definitely on your way. Like iknowsquat said, it's probably just that the file didn't download correctly.
You could also just start over and watch the video for the No PC method.
It shows every single step. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzEot2oYKbw

1- I see you guys are saying I need to flash ROM/Radio/Wimax to use Froyo. I used the 2.2 deodexed rom and everything seems to be fine.i also downloaded the radio and wimax but did not flash those. Everything seems to be fine but am I missing something Im not aware of and need to flash the radio and wimax now?
2-I know you guys said I can recover and flash without my laptop now, but I still see a lot of instructions showing you having to use the "Run" box on your computer. Is there a detailed "how-to"on flashing without a computer? I really want to try out some roms today but don't want to mess anything up. I have read and searched a lot on here and xda, but don't think I fully understand yet. I just want to know as much about it as I can before I dive in. Thanks

FastRX8- I basically need a "backup/flashing for Android noobs" like what you have done with this thread for rooting. I can't wait until I understand Android like I do Winmo.....
The steps are in there. Like iknowsquat said, download Quick Boot to get into recovery.
Then you can take a look at the tutorial for backup/restore or flashing a rom.
Use Section 4 - Manual Nand Backup/Restore
Use quick boot to get to recovery and then start from step 4C.

Step 2Q in section 2 tells you how to install a custom rom.
Basically, you put the zip file on your storage card and select "Flash zip from sdcard" on the recovery screen.

These are also shown in the videos.
