I get that error to at my home. At work, 12 miles away, everything works fine. I think it's dependent on whatever source it's trying to put the GPS coordinates on a map (probably an online source rather than something on our phones). It used to tell me that I was in a city about 30 miles away at my home...now it just says no weather data available.

i have two phones, one is connected to a line and the other isn't, on the one is not connected to any network which i would assume means that it cant actually use any network signal is actually always finding correct gps and weather location if im connected through wifi.
i don't know why it works but it does.

i don't know why it works but it does.
It doesn't need the network signal to get the GPS location since it just uses the GPS hardware. Are both phones running the same ROM? Does the one that is activated also work when/if on wifi?

both have the same rom and the activated one does work with or without wifi on.
im on sprint if that makes any difference, and i always use just the updated sys that omj posts and not the entire kitchen, i use packages from the xda 2.5 thread.

Does your phone use AGPS on one and not the other? That could be the culprit. The GPS sticky outlines how to set it up.

Very very nice. I am really liking the 6.5 ROM. I can't believe I got my Vogue two years ago this week.

i have agps on on both, but even if i change to "don't use apgs" it still works.
a lot of people have location not working on many different roms but it might just have something to do with where they are and not the roms or packages, but still, if gps works regardless of an activated phone or not then something is a little weird with that.
i guess that our phone can be used for something even after we get a new one.

I moved from NC to SC and sprint sucks in this area so I put my sprint account on vacation, I only used my diamond as a fancy pda with wifi, when around a wifi area everything data worked fine just like I had a data plan, away from wifi, the gps worked fine (after I installed and tested) a few of the gps maps that you can actually put part of the map on the phone, gps doesn't need any data plan as long as you have the maps on the phone, and for updating the weather, etc, works fine with the phone not activated but through wifi

hope that helps

I currently have it on alltel prepaid and only turn on the data when I need to check something if wifi isn't near, the data is .10/minute so I'm careful with it
