I have the exact same problem, the location of the smudge you discribe is bottom center of my screen, does look like oil spill, I also have the screen protector that came with my phone on the unit. I was considering removing the screen protector and attenpting to clean the unit until I read this post. my original reaction was WTF.. first I thought it was oil. then I appempted to wipe it off. that didn't work. anyways this is my first post. thanks all |

I'm gonna swing by a different Sprint store tomorrow to see what they have to say. This is my first HTC phone and I'll have to say the build quality sucks. My friends have been through the 8125/8525/8925 but I don't recall any of them having this "common" touch screen problem. |

Re: UPDATE:Rainbow looking circle
i had the same problem but my smudge was a well defined rectangle right in the center of the screen. Took it to sprint store, they ordered me a brand new one free!

Re: UPDATE:Rainbow looking circle
btw, this is a KNOWN manufacturer's defect. Here's the breakdown. The smudge you see is an effect called newton's rings and is best visible in monochromatic light. Out in open sunshine you can barely see it but while indoors, it becomes really visible.
The store I took it to had huge windows so lot of light coming through and you had to hold the phone at an extreme angle to be able to see the effect. The guy I showed it to had no idea what it was and tried to show it to the manager of the store who was standing next to him. The manager guy was like "i don't see anything wrong here". The guy helping me tried to show it to him again, but the manager of the store rudely walked away saying "i don't see anything." Then the guy helping me started talking to someone on his little nextel walkie-talkie, asking him about TP screens. The guy on the other end said "The only thing I know about the Touch Pros are that some of them get this oily looking smudge on the screen and its eligible for replacement." Then the guy asked him if I had to pay anything for it and the guy on the other end was like "No we cover it all, it's a known defect.". I'm not sure the guy would have replaced it for free if I hadn't already heard its eligible for free replacement on his walkie-talkie so you just gotta find someone willing to help |

Re: UPDATE:Rainbow looking circle
I have the same stupid oil rainbow rectangle problem:
Ok, I was with AT&T and purchased my TP Fuze on 11/11/08. About 3 months later the rainbow rectangle appeared. At first I thought ok w/e no big deal, however it's quite dissapointing to have such a looker of a phone have such an ugly screen problem! Anyway I decided to leave it be after doing the same thread reading research through xda, howardforums, and here. However, I read in many places that it's happened to many HTC devices over the years, not just the TP or the Diamond! Doesn't that = class action lawsuit? BillJr106 says here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...&postcount=143 "So I heard someone say that this is being considered a "Cosmetic Defect" by HTC and not being covered under the 90 day ( or is it 30 day ) warranty?? I think if that is true, it might be time for a little wake up call called "Class Action Lawsuit". Nothing gets a company moving better, and taking care of defects, better then a good old fashioned Class Action Suit. Im sure there is a lawyer somewhere willing to pick it up for a portion of the settlement. I for one wont tolerate paying this much for a touch screen phone that has a defect in the touch screen. My PPC6700 made it 2 years with no overheating issues, no touch screen issues, and actually ran a little better ( altho in the touch pros defense, when I disable touch flo 3d, the phone runs quite fast. )." Anyway, after doing all of my homework I decided not to try to send it to AT&T as they said screens aren't covered by the insurance plan (maybe I should've taken it into a store, I can't remember if I ever tried that route). What I need to know: Has anyone with the rainbow rectangle had any problems develop from it? I'm hoping the answer is yes because I just sent my phone to HTC (since I'm now with T-Mo anyway) and praying I don't have to pay for a new screen or phone + the diagnostics. Anyway I got the email that they "recevied the unit" at 9:30 am CT yesterday, and then I called and checked on the RMA and they said a tech is currently looking at it.. So hopefully I won't receive the dreadful phone call saying I need to pay, because if they don't call they are apparently repairing it for free under warranty. I can't imagine the fallout if the Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2 have this same problem! What about the G1 and G2, since other htc phones in the past have had the same problem?? Re: UPDATE:Rainbow looking circle
Ok so I received the call. gonna have to pay the $35 plus parts, labor, and shipping, for a total of $202.50 or .60.
Anyway, they said it was of course the newton ring, and was caused by a pressure point, and that the screen was not flat, this is why the touch function stopped working. Obviously, this is not the case just as all of you are aware, since the phone actually overheats, thus creating the newton ring. Like some of you, I also use the phone for gps and naturally charge the phone at the same time. Are we not allowed to do that? I will be starting a new thread for anyone interested in taking this further and possibly starting a class action lawsuit. Last edited by reyderosquillas; 05-15-2009 at 10:40 AM. |

Re: UPDATE:Rainbow looking circle
the dreaded oil smudge screen of death...ugh. I have a great deal of experience with this. I first noticed this phenomenon on my old Touch, which luckily enough first appeared within a couple weeks of Touch Pros launch, so I let it go.
I got my TP a few weeks after initial launch...The dreaded OSSOD appeared again within 2 months. Went to sprint store, got a brand new phone for free through TEP. Second TP, OSSOD'd on me a month later. Went to sprint, got a brand new TP with TEP. My third TP lasted a good while, maybe 4 months, then one fateful day, OSSOD...This was last week. Back to sprint store I go. Some moron rep there tells me, 'oh thats normal, blah blah, you can barely see it etc etc' I said, umm no its not normal its a complete defect of product. I dont pay 300 bucks for a touch screen phone to have its screen geek out on me. She spitefully replies 'well I can file a ticket but they wont do anything.' And I come back, guess what, they order my 4th TP I picked up TP #4 yesterday...Only sucky thing is nowadays I guess they have refurbs, so no more brand new TPs with box full of free accessories On the up side this new TP was manufactured Jan 29 09 so maybe they fixed some bugs. Ill let yall know. PS dont give up, dont take no on getting this replaced FOR FREE. It is a defect of product, not normal, not from sun or farting or any other BS excuse. I BABY my phones, always use screen protectors, never dropped a single TP even once. The OSSOD just randomly manifests itself. |
