Re: Update: TP heats up, then battery drains, even while on charger.

Just called Sprint and they said for this EXACT same problem and they said my phone was defective, they offered to send me a new one but then said all touch pros were on back order and offered me any other phone I wanted instead. So I told them to notate my account and said I would be calling back soon enough to check when these new batch of phones were available - I have 30 days to do this. Hopefully the new batch of phones wont have this problem. Anyhow, that's the story as it goes.

Same story here, except I got no gaurantee that the new phones would come in before 11/24, when my BB 30-day expires. So I am just going to return the phone, and get it through EVP.

Yeah, I lose the amazing discount by ordering through BB, (I only paid $244 for the phone,) but my company is buying it anyways. The way I see it, I got to "preview" a concept phone, because clearly this isn't the one they intended for the end-user to purchase.

I wouldn't say that. Maybe there really are defective units, but mine is definetly not one of them. Since getting my Pro I have regularly subjected it to the same abuse that I put my Mogul through, and I haven't had any issues with it refusing to charge yet. Here is a typical scenario:

Driving in my car with the Pro on a charger. WMWifiRouter providing my car PC with an internet connection (for streaming Rhapsody music, etc). That means cellular and WiFi radios are both blasting, and I'm already producing far more heat than just a phone call. Now add iGO8 to the mix. That means GPS is active, the processor is getting a heavy workout, and the screen is constantly on. Next, add heavy Bluetooth activity thanks to A2DP streaming the iGO verbal directions to my car PC to play over the speakers. And just to further burden the processor and WiFi connection, I have an active MyMobiler session displaying my phones screen on the PC.

I do this regularly for 1.5-2 hours on my commute (working in downtown Houston and living north of Conroe is bad idea, by the way). I haven't once had the phone stop charging, and I always get out of the car with >75% battery despite a measly 500mA USB charger. I do typically make it a point to slide the keyboard open and put the phone where it can get a little air flow though. I can't imagine a much more intense torture test. Take from that what you will, but don't say that if you aren't having issues you're not a power user. Maybe there is a bad batch, or maybe we all just need to take a few steps to let the device cool better. Why don't some of the people who are having issues try to duplicate their problems while employing some of the previously mentioned cooling methods?

See, that's the thing. The end user shouldn't have to jump through loops and sacrifice in order to enjoy normal functioning. Certainly opening the keyboard can help increase flow, but I'm not going to do that during a call. I also don't always have access to an a/c vent or am not going to keep my windows cracked during the winter just so my phone can charge.

I have a question, has anyone tried the VZ radio? I heard you can run that with sprints network. Does it have the same heat issues? If it does than maybe both are effected, but if its not than we know its the radio.

I don't know. I guess we're just never going to see things in the same light.

I don't consider my scenario as "normal functioning." In fact, it's probably prohibited usage in a number of ways

And I don't consider it jumping through hoops to not leave an expensive electronic device (any expensive electronic device) baking in direct sunlight, in an enclosed glove box, or any number of situations that is just common sense to avoid with delicate electronics. Do you leave your laptop wrapped up in a blanket while it's running? Or surf the net in the kitchen with it sitting next to the stove?

Granted, if I couldn't make it through a lengthy call without the unit fully discharging the battery (despite being on a charger) I'd be a little perturbed. But I don't think every user is experiencing that. You hear about the problems because it is the upset people with malfunctioning phones that are the ones posting about it on the internet. Few people post just to say everything is working as intended.

Ya, hopefully you get a good device the second time around. It'd be a shame to miss out on all that this phone has to offer - when it is working correctly

No, actually I have been one of the users experiencing battery charge cutoff. I also never meant to store the phone in a glove box or leave it in direct sunlight. What I mean by normal functioning is that when I make international calls early in the morning for 30 minutes to 1.5 hrs at a time I would like to be able to use my charger and finish the call with 100% battery, not 50%. Otherwise, I would end up starting my day with 50% battery life. Since I'm on the "field" I'm not going to have access to chargers, nor do I want to carry an extra battery in my pocket. I have tested my phone multiple times and it cuts charge 30-45 minutes in while using the phone. This is the only problem I've experienced. Everything else is butter. If they can roll out a radio rom update that makes it more efficient I'm ready to give that a spin before considering return.
