Also while the pp is supposed to be used by the os I think the cprog, device.exe, and gwes, filesys may all use that reserved pp ram. Try it out some time and tell me what you think.
Good job thinking that one through... you now have rep..
I've flashed everything from zero to 34, by two's different ROM's even a few odd numbers along the way.

Just recommended yesterday in some thread to a guy running out of memory in Opera to flash pp 10-12 for starters. The lower you go the more RAM you'll have on start & the more sluggish the OS will be, screen changes, Sense slider, etc.. you're giving the OS less RAM to work with... But, more will be available to the programs... like Opera.

I agree with you i.e. the OS being some of the very processes your mentioned. And, I believe those progs will actually give up some of it when needed if RAM is running low. BUT, what I found in my testing (may be diff for others)... was that unless you had a lot of RAM to start, the OS would bottom out & die, not returning any when needed. If I started around 60 for example with pp zero, and used a few progs, google maps, several opera tabs... it litterally wouldn't release the RAM again after dropping below 15MB lets say, and would get so low it would lock my TP2 up completely, recoverable only on a reboot.

With a Startmenu replacement, starting @ around 85 MB lets say, not only does the OS (menu's, graphics, screen changes, etc..) smoke, it never bottoms out!! Starting with even more has given better results.

One for you... burn 007 @ 8 run for a couple days, then burn it @ 32... see for yourself, I'd like to hear your results!

I ran 32 for a while but really started to run out of RAM for program use fast, but that was before running start & sense replacements (getting 120 MB of RAM after dumping Arkswitch).

Zero definintally uses more up front, makes the OS, menu's, etc REAL snappy... Zero is managed by Windows & usually MS blows RAM management.. but with 120 to start, I've still got more than enough to deal with. Had 2 programs running & wifi router still had 67 MB free!

Many moons ago all our problems for servers & server farm issues were solved with one simple phrase... more RAM.
Priority 1: ~25MB start menu replacement
2: dump sense & cookie
Now we have over 115 to work with even with some cabs loaded.. wowsers..

A couple times in the Energy thread I burned the same ROM over & over starting around pp12 I think, going to 24ish.. I list the RAM each time.

Maybe next ROM for the heck of it I'll burn a 2, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 & check how much RAM after each... would really be interested in how much with a pp of 4 lets say!! I'll bet around 134MB with our setup dumping start & sense!!! Seems distant to me now, but if I remember right it was a 1 to 1 ratio... (drop 10 gain 10)

Hey Tera, Mine, Energy, or Sharkie's (what I revolve thru).. I usually compromise on ppl of 6 w/o co0kie and have had no problems. +1 on Arkswitch since I never use it. I also use HTCRIE to remove it; as well as, any other bloat not applicable when flashing other ROMs ie ringers, alarms, language, wallpapers, programs, avatars, "classicbluetsk" etc. Any thoughts on this as I am not an expert on this as much as I am doors and windows.

Thoughts on which one..? u mentioned a bunch!
...and these are only my thoughts... best to try it all & see what u like!!
If u multi task tons, run multiple tabs in opera all the time & dont give a rip about animation, flashy quick menu changes, pretty background, etc.. then pp of 6 may be the best 4 u!

Re. HTCRIE, tried it, very nice, works good
i believe energy said it once about the tp2... tons of program space... not much ram... vs another phone, which had the opposite...
I believe in KISS (keep it simple st...), so usually concentrait on priorities... removing the entire footprint of a program isnt important to me personally, if the issue isnt program space... more important to stop it from running & using valuable RAM... which seems 2 me is a much much bigger prioity on a TP2. If i ever run low on internal storage, i usually ID programs that run fine from the SD card & keep them their from ROM 2 ROM.Simply copy the .lnk files i keep in a lnk backup dir on SD to windows\start menu\programs, instead of HTCRIE... but hey, thats what i do... doesnt make it right or best for u!

My top 3 priorities on a tp2: RAM, RAM, RAM ) Replace start men (25MB), sense (25MB)
(some claim even higher, results vary.. of course depending on what u replace them with!) lol
Now #3 RAM saver in MY opinion.. is page pool... drop it 10, get 10 more... but now that you have another 50, do you need that extra 10??? Especially if it costs u something? (flashy menu speed, animation, background changes, etc.. (stuff the OS RAM helps). i cant answer that 4 u... if so, pp of 6 would probably start u out over 130MB!! wow

* to anyone reading this... these are just thoughts & lots of trails & testing, not right or wrong... if your tp2 runs great on a stock ROM & u have no issues & are happy, dont do any of this.. just enjoy what u have )!!!

Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))

I've run OCT 1.5v (Ninja Duck's repack) for a while now and it works great for me, but I haven't tried running android.

I set my steps to "0" that way the max speed is nothing less than the max I set it at (748mhz). I kept reading of people that where having problems with programs because OCT would drop the Mhz lower than what the program needed and it would lock up or crash. Setting the steps to 0 makes the phone work just like it did before, just a higher max CPU speed.

I think that the additional settings were put in for the other "less powerful" phones that program was written for.

  • Manila Start - 80MB / 50MB

  • WinStart Beta - 64MB / 38MB
  • Standard Start- 62MB / 37MB

Using RC3 for some time, I noticed that memory did go down. As I suspected, the memory was being consumed by another process: GWES

So I saw the follow ups to the posts from you and teradog. Personally I use quickmenu start (since the day the mods came out to use it vs winmo start) and get around the same memory free footprint like manila or panel start after boot time. I've also seen posts in other threads about the various start layout options memory footprints.

Is that post boot time memory free gap between winstart rc3 vs manila/panel still about 15MB after the additional testing? Was not sure if I missed something in the subsequent posts. Have you (or teradog) had a chance to see what rc4 does to those memory numbers?

I have not tried winstart since I do not want to mess around with that whole beta expire date kills the app thing. Guess call me lazy lol.

I also have quickmenu as well! top left corner of your screen, even if you're running a 653 ROM! And use wktask, just move it over to the right & leave a little room for the invisible button (you can make it visible)

Don't forget to uncheck Sense! And unless I really read it all wrong, it appears you are mixing up 2 different things! Startmenu replacements (quickmenu & panel from above same sentence) & home/today/manila/sense replacements (manila). However, having said that.... you could use NOTHING at all for the today screen, just a background pic & use quickmenu (a NRG ROM startmenu replacement named compact startmenu)...

I've written volumes on replacing the startmenu & home screen. In fact the startmenu replacements in the energy ROM today were very possibly a result of several posts & my discussions with NRG.(#25326), ... and then the next ROM series included a another brilliant NRG move... a Start menu layout switch where you could choose your own.. his, quickmenu & a couple of others..!

re. RC... I didn't even know there was a timebomb. Rumor was for a while NRG was helping her & we were going to see it in the startmenu layout switch choice..., I tried one RC & it was bad, so I went back to beta 2 & I'm 100% sure of the memory finding, both in total, in processes or other... almost none in beta 2.

*edit* To put this into perspective (lest the thread be killed discussing revision numbers... :>)) ... you could use all 4 of the start menu choices & all of them totaled wouldn't come close to the 25 MB the Windows startmenu uses. Point being? Use a startmenu replacement if you're having an issue with RAM & low memory errors. If not, Don't worry... be happy! :>))

I would not recommend any version other than the beta2..
I have to say that I tried WinStart4&5 and both gave me problems.
I could not "refresh" it after I rearranged some shortcuts into folders.
This problem persisted regardless of uninstalls and install of other versions.

I was given quik support, that the settings were actually in the registry.
So I deleted and when it rebuild, it was ruined with missing icon pics.
So after a hard reset, I realized wasn't worth keeping and there was no excuse for having not noticed this issue.
But the developer said final version will have a check to see if any ".lnk" changed.

I have grown to really like "MMAppLauncher".
It does not need extra cab files, (like others) to disable the startmenu.
It looks better and more polished than the others.
You can even move links and replace icons in this app.
I think it's the best, but that beta2 app would be my second choice.

The two others I will post are/look less polished, and require a "disable startmenu" cab.
I will post also.

I've tried that in Energyrom, and there was annoying lag/delay of whole unit,
for a few seconds, when tapping middle area of the bar where no quiikmenu and no startmenu exists, as it is replaced.
Without an app that cover the middel of the taskbar, your unit will freeze for a few seconds,
I posted this, but it was never corrected or adressed(common in Energy thread issues take long before correction).
Probably forgotten because most users use 6.5.x, so theres no topbar,
thus not enough complaints.
