I guess it would need to be actions taken AFTER the sale. Suppose it was discovered how to get the gps enabled on the 6700 for instance. Anything the particular phone co. did to again disable the gps on the phones would not be legal in my view. Wasn't something like this done by Apple to the iphones that people unlocked?
It would be great if the Verizon 6800 got gps enabled though. |

Heh - they claimed it wasn't intentional (but you know they got a good laugh out of it).
It's not illegal to sell a crippled device. It is illegal to sell a crippled device without disclosure when a reasonable person has an expectation that it isn't so crippled. Thus, the intel chip crippling is legal because you are sold the part under the crippled spec. Selling a 15" laptop display that only 14" of work would be illegal - everyone expects all 15" to work (I actually had this problem once). Apple isn't liable for crippling unlocked iphones unless malice can be demonstrated...they clearly can't be held responsible for any side effect of your random phone modification.

yeah I read that vzw would be doing the evdo-A in a rom update, but no mention of gps for vzw. Kindof hoping that gps comes with it, but am counting on having all those features by the time htc does a vzw release.

To all of the wannabe lawyers posting about their views of the illegality of selling a "crippled" device or making a "crippling" modification after the sale:
Is it illegal to sell a car with a speed governor? If not, then selling a "crippled" device is not illegal. Is it illegal for Microsoft to issue an OS update that closes a security hole that someone was exploiting on their own computer? If not, then it is not illegal to "cripple" a device after the sale. |

Oh that hurts. I think I speak for most of us when I say we are not wannabe laywers, we would rather go to heaven when we die. Seriously though, who cares? Verizon customers just want gps too. (Hear that Verizon, we know you monitor these boards)
