Heh - they claimed it wasn't intentional (but you know they got a good laugh out of it).

It's not illegal to sell a crippled device. It is illegal to sell a crippled device without disclosure when a reasonable person has an expectation that it isn't so crippled. Thus, the intel chip crippling is legal because you are sold the part under the crippled spec. Selling a 15" laptop display that only 14" of work would be illegal - everyone expects all 15" to work (I actually had this problem once).

Apple isn't liable for crippling unlocked iphones unless malice can be demonstrated...they clearly can't be held responsible for any side effect of your random phone modification.
