Go to menu > settings > about phone > battery. Now look at Awake Time vs Up Time. This is the key to your idle usage. If your awake time and Up time are really close to eachother, and your Awake time doesn't reflect how much you've actually had the phone with the screen on then something is keeping it from going to sleep. First 2 days I had the phone my awake time and up time were practically the same. Now this meter does read from the last time you reset the phone. So you may want to restart the phone to get it to 0 and go from there.

The best tool to use to check what apps are keeping it awake are Spare Parts. You can download this from the marketplace and you don't need to be rooted. Once you open the app go to battery history > click on other usage > and change it to partial wake usage. This will list out all the apps keeping your phone from sleeping when you turn the screen off. A few people had a problem with the calendar keeping the phone awake including myself. This turned out to be caused by putting in your flikr account information. Removing that solved it for me and the others.

The scaling should affect mostly when people's phones are staying in Partial awake which normally is at full cpu speed, but because you guys are throttling you're dropping it to 254mhz. Oh btw I have WiFi on but sleep policy set to never, BT off, GPS ON, and 4G off.
could you please explain the difference between "sleep mode" and just turning the screen off?

is everything still functional? Does it take a lil longer to wake up? and where did you find these settings? All i find is screen timeout settings.

Like was said Wifi uses less juice cuz once it's locked onto a connection it doesn't continually search for others. The reason for the Never in sleep policy is this. If you turn off your screen and it stays off for 5 minutes the phone will shut off wifi and go to 3G so in essence you aren't getting any of the benefits of using wifi for your data and only keeping the radio open for phone calls and texts. This will save people in poor cell areas the most amount of battery if they have a wifi hotspot for data.

The post above your reply shows how to find the awake status and up time status. As far as the difference. Sleep mode is actually meaning the chipset is going into it's low power state, which means everything goes into low power, not just the main processor (which is all underclocking is doing). As far as how you'll notice a difference in performance, you won't. It works better than underclocking since it's doing everything as the chipset manufacturer designed. comes out of sleep instantly the second you push the power button and goes straight to full power faster than using apps to control processor speed.

While your phone is in sleep it's still connected and data is still running, so you're not going to miss anything. Some IM apps keep your phone awake even if you shut off the screen, for example aim does, but google talk does not. This is based on how the developers designed their apps and the sleep status in their apps.

Thanks, but lemme get this right...

You're saying that I don't have to apply any settings in the phone in order for it to go into "sleep mode" (full underclocking as you described) after turning off the screen? As long as I have no apps running in the background which have poor settings for sleep mode.??

Re: Root + OverclockWidget = Insane Battery Life 40+ Hours

** to everyone reading** when looking in the battery use settings, if Android System is above 30%, something may be wrong... i remember my battery was dieing soooo fast and then check this for the first time to see 78%.. my buddy compared his hero which said 12%... I did a hard reset and it solved the issue (remember hard reset erases EVERYTHING)... now i'm consistent around 20%+-

Exactly the phone should go into sleep mode whenever you turn the screen off. If it's not it's because an app is running that's requesting full power from the processor. Spare Parts should help you determine which app/apps that is.

Yes android system will throughout a day keep your phone awake for maybe 5-25 minutes, but this is dependent on how often you have certain programs set to check mail, check twitter, facebook updates, stocks, quotes, weather. I have 3 gmail accounts. I'm using the gmail app and just have it set to sync automatically, and I'm not getting much wake usage a day out of Android system.
