While your phone is in sleep it's still connected and data is still running, so you're not going to miss anything. Some IM apps keep your phone awake even if you shut off the screen, for example aim does, but google talk does not. This is based on how the developers designed their apps and the sleep status in their apps.

You're saying that I don't have to apply any settings in the phone in order for it to go into "sleep mode" (full underclocking as you described) after turning off the screen? As long as I have no apps running in the background which have poor settings for sleep mode.??
