The post above your reply shows how to find the awake status and up time status. As far as the difference. Sleep mode is actually meaning the chipset is going into it's low power state, which means everything goes into low power, not just the main processor (which is all underclocking is doing). As far as how you'll notice a difference in performance, you won't. It works better than underclocking since it's doing everything as the chipset manufacturer designed. comes out of sleep instantly the second you push the power button and goes straight to full power faster than using apps to control processor speed.

While your phone is in sleep it's still connected and data is still running, so you're not going to miss anything. Some IM apps keep your phone awake even if you shut off the screen, for example aim does, but google talk does not. This is based on how the developers designed their apps and the sleep status in their apps.
