If you turn off your screen and it stays off for 5 minutes the phone will shut off wifi and go to 3G so in essence you aren't getting any of the benefits of using wifi for your data and only keeping the radio open for phone calls and texts. This will save people in poor cell areas the most amount of battery if they have a wifi hotspot for data.
