Yes spot on, that is why Google pushed for open networks, and the open handset alliance.

While maybe empowering phone owners to take control of their OS on their phone may not be a goal of Android developers, manufacturers, or carriers.... it is a benefit. Pretty much all of the manufacturers take steps to prevent it. However much like the Iphone, once a developer on already manufactured and released phone (HTC G1) has root access their limit is their coding abilities and hardware capabilities. Since Android code is Open Source they can pretty much Mod, tweak, anything in the OS (again, unless there are specific proprietary code embedded in the phone OS).
Yes. Now we're on the same page. Only thing is Dev phone 1. Yes, it is a device U can put Android in the sole purpose of developing the use of an Android OS. But it cannot be use as a personal handset or be sold as a phone that can be used under any carrier.

Yes I believe that. But since Google started it, They will still have a voice on the direction the Android is heading. Not all of the members are neccesarily to be a developer. Some of them are chip makers, Manufacturers etc. If they want android to be on their device, They have to be a member first. Like what they said on wiki, there are some companies which are not members. Like AT&T.that is why AT&T doesn't have an Android handset. atleast for now. Verizon is not a member either which is why there is no Android for Verizon. But they said that Verizon have a change of heart. So meaning, They will release an Android in the near future.
the only other way to have Android on a device w/o being a member is to go to China. They don't have rules there.

Yes it can. Google it. There are users out there with them on ATT and TMobile.

It's pretty much the only phone out of the box that has an unlocked bootloader allowing you to modify the OS.... however it doesn't take much to get to that on other Android phones.

The Dev phone is basically a Sim Unlocked, and bootloader unlocked HTC G1. Anything you do to a Dev phone you can drop into a rooted G1.

Oh ok. U can prolly use it as personal but not sell it. Here is what is says about the Dev phone:

Note that Android Dev Phone 1 devices are not intended for non-developer end-users. Because the device can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end-users operate these devices at their own risk.

I would modify this. With pretty much all device manufacturers developing for the handset alliance, you can pretty much bet they aren't going to develop a Android implementation outside of the alliance. Not worth the time, much easier to focus on one effort. So then you'd have to go to China, where there are plenty of electronics manufacturers that aren't a part of the alliance that could aide in such an effort.

I'm sure it would be the same folks making Iphone knock offs that explode.

PS. Now that we are on the same page... I am betting getting here would have taken 1 minute IRL . The Internets can be the devil sometimes.

Yes they are the same cloners. LMAO. But they are not developing the OS. They just get what is available and slap it on they devices. Which BTW, is very impressive. Mosly they do MID's. I am a big fan of MID's too. SO I follow them.

U can see that the Android OS they put came from a Phone Bcoz there is Phone Setup on a MID. LOL.

Watch this. I have a comment on it.

Yeah. It is a truly open device. Allowing a general user who knows nothing of development to really shoot themselves in the foot.

Not sure of you age.... but if you are familiar with Windows 3.0 ... this type of phone can be the same type of thing. I remember seeing countless Packard Bell customers on Windows 3.0 computers coming in complaining their computers didn't work.... after they decided to delete programs (OS files required to make windows work) they thought they didn't need.

An untrained person could easily brick the phone.

Re: HTC leo or Touch Pro2

The Leo is a rumor period. There are no known specs (just heresay on forums). No one knows what it looks like, whether it will be GSM only, or offered on CDMA, etc etc etc.

Leo is all speculation.
