Priming vs operating really seems like a semantic issue, but I understand what you are saying, and I thought that is what I was getting at when I said: "It initiates the GPS, then redirects the output to whatever you tell it to (BT, a particular com port, etc)."

There are some programs that simply refuse to work with the native WM GPS intermediate driver. It's not just a matter of feedback on the progress toward a lock. Some will absolutely, positively not work, which is why a program like GPSGate is sometimes necessary. I was using priming in the sense that it initiates and controls access to the GPS chip. Maybe that is an incorrect usage, I don't know, but in that sense there absolutely are programs that require "priming."

Any program that support WM GPS API will probably work fine. Anything that is restricted to COM only ports and uses COM4 directly will probably run iffy. Not a priming issue.

Maybe early GPS DLL's running some apps depending if you need kickstart or not (running Secured or not) started some of the DLL's and "primed things". If that was the case you probably didn't have to "wait" if you know what I mean.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

After using the GPS quite a bit over the past few days I noticed since making the change to GPSMode=4 that it does not always get an assist. But since I'm confindent I can now get an assist I went back to trying the sprint IP address.

I waited for a COLD Gps start this morning to see how it works.

It locked onto my position with 0 sats very quickly. It was not using a cached position in google maps because it did move. Then 4-5 sats came on in about 30 seconds or less. This is Inside. It's not uncommon for me to get 4 sats inside but not this quick. This was one of the best COLD starts I've had inside.

I attached a MemMaid Registry script that changes both. If you don't have have memmaid you can just read it and manually update using registry editor.

I'll know better in a couple days.

Trivial to try but YMMV.

Update: I have consistently got an "Assisted" position (a position nearby with 0 Sats showing) with GoogleMaps in under 10 seconds inside or out.

Note: Setting AGPS IP Server (the suggested change) to Sprint Server may not help if your Carrier is not Sprint or possibly make things worse but it won't hurt to try it.
Note: It also won't help if your new GPS DLL's are not properly installed (read http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25407), using these settings won't hurt if your not using newest DLL's. If it doesn't help then I suspect you don't have the new DLL's or they are not installed correctly (Keep Trying).
Note: My GPSDaemonServer.DLL does NOT autostart even though I've enabled Unsigned DLL's. I'm not running KickStart and I find I don't need GPSDaemonServer.DLL running at all so I disabled the service using Memmaid by setting it to Manual. The OLD GPS DLL's required this server running and it did auto start for me. Strange but true.

Edit: I Added Second Registry Script that RESET's it to factory setting as well.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

Update: Since I changed the IP address I now get Assist every time while 0 Sat's is diaplay. And very very quickly.

I should also mention when I tried IP address change before I was on OLD DLL's.

With new DLL's fiddling with the GPS settings (GPSMode and IP) both definitely effect things. If they don't effect how your device behaves you need to figure out what's wrong with DLL install etc.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

This is all great... for sprint customers, but I dont think it helps other carriers. I have tried connecting to the server by just poking at the port and it does not respond. Seems that this IP and port are not valid or they are restricting access only from their network. so if you are on Verizon like Im this is not likely to help you much and may slow things down some (as the device will try to connect and fail). This may also account for some (probably not all) of the performance variance that people have been seeing too.

I am going to try a few more things from my phone to see if Sprint's server will respond. However I think the key is going to be finding an open server or on on your providers network. The Verizon server IP seems to be a HUGE mystery as folks on HOFO have been looking for some time without success (that I have found).

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I agree and did the same check you did and could not reach Sprint Server either when not on the Sprint Network. I'm gonna try tethering through phone and see if TelNet to that Sprint IP and port works.

I also noticed Assist does not work every time depending on my location. I'm roaming now out in the boonies and don't get any assist.

There must be an IP and Port for Verizon.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I see several attachments and don't feel like downloading all of them and trying all of them. Does anyone know exactly which reg-edits will work and can someone type them up or copy/paste them here?

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

If you are NOT on Sprint all you want is GPSMode=4

See this post for that http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...11&postcount=1

If you are on Sprint Use this Post which sets both GPSMode=4 and Sprint Assist Server

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...1&postcount=24

There is also a second script in this post with RESET in the name that puts it back to Stock ROM settings.

If you don't have memmaid just open the files with a text editor.

I just confirmed that the Sprint Server and Port is alive only accessable to Sprint Users.

Do you get this same response if you are at a completely new location then the last time you operated a GPS program?? The applications themselves cache your last location and will go there immediately upon starting the "use gps" option. I thought I was getting similar behavior until I drove 15 miles away and tried it again... and it showed me at the last spot I used the GPS with a little blinking dot.
