totally placebo.
Well,
With my other ROM's without the change I could not get a lock at all, ANYTIME, only 1 or 2 sats popping up briefly with much longer times of "0" sats showing up...all with no locks.

After a reflash of a ROM - then the GPSmode=4 change, and then jumping into (destinator 7) for a veiw of the sats - immeadatly I was seeing many sats. Instant lock? - Nope! but I would get a lock in about 3 minutes....whereas before I would wait 30 minutes with still no lock without the reg change.

I would say if you are getting a lock without the change - good for you....for me I was getting no-lock without the change. GPSmode=4 allowed me to actually get a lock.

I make no comment on the "speed" of lock or whether or not it is true AGPS- just the fact that now I can get one.

I don't know if this has been talked about here in the Vogue forum or not, but TalynOne has done pretty extensive documentation of GPS for the Titan. Probably 99% applicable to the Vogue as well.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I have to agree. This makes a big difference in locks. I'm using it with Derek's 19.1 Rom and radio 3.37. I don't even have to start with GPS viewer. I just goto Google Map, set the GPS to get the info from windows, toggle use gps and within 30 seconds later it gets a lock. Even find my location works. I did leave my QOS stock (50).

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

After my testing to work I can confirm it has improved my gps however I do not concur as to being agps. Since agps would work inside of my building and it does not pretty much 30 seconds after I shut the door to the back of my store I lost satellite reception using Garmin XT and then checked Gmap's and no satellites as well. Went outdoors and reacquired. It might work in conjunction with it to provide data to help acquire a faster lock but I believe that is the extent of it.

Correct, I don't even bother Priming with anything any more. Just go straight to iGuidance (with GPSGate pointing at "WM GPS" for input and COM1 for output.

I got some of this information from the Mogul Forums and one site (may have been a microsoft site).

One thing I might explain.

Running in GPSMode=2 *might* also be using assist but what it may do is not report cellular position (by design) but pass the information to the GPS for Sat location. The reason this mode may exist is, in some cases it may better to have NO position than a wrong one (the Cell Triangulation will offten be off by a block or so , sometimes more sometimes less]). For example when navigating and suddenly you loose Sats and it says take a U turn out of the blue rather than "Waiting for GPS Lock".

But GPSMode=4 definitely reports Cell Triangulation Position (while it waits for Sats or if Sats are not reachable). I prefer this mode because you can better tell what's going on.

So this might explain why some people say it's "The Same" to obtain Sat Lock and others (that want to see something happening) say it's better. It could be Placebo effect getting a "close" position while you wait (That's not a Sat lock position).

But I feel like assist is not working in GPSMode=2 and I prefer seeing what's going on. If you don't see positions off by a block or so with 0 Sats something else may be broken. If Google Maps is sitting off the coast of Nigeria (Plain Blue Screen with Blue Dot, Zoom Out to see where you are) your assist is not working (or not Reporting Position).

It might be important to update your GPS DLL's because I swear I tried this on earlier setup and I saw no change.

I setup my friends phone the same way. One morning we'll fire them both up from COLD start each set to different modes and see what we get.

I think new DLL's are just as important.

I've been been baby sitting my adult daughter that's sick and driving all over the place making BT headset calls while navigating and not a single hiccup (not a single GPS Hang since new DLL's for 2 days or so with heavy use).

I love this thing.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I think there might be some confusion regarding "priming" of the GPS. I don't believe GPS Viewer does anything unique to activate the GPS chip. Any number of programs can be used: Google Maps, Live Search, GPS Viewer, GPSToday, etc. The whole issue of priming really only relates to a few programs that have trouble initiating and/or accessing the built-in GPS themselves. These are mainly dedicated Nav programs like iGuidance, TomTom, etc., that were written to take GPS data specifically from an external BT/USB GPS unit.

iGuidance does require the use of another program to prime the GPS. In this case, GPSGate is the program doing the priming. It initiates the GPS, then redirects the output to whatever you tell it to (BT, a particular com port, etc).

I've never needed GPS Viewer to access the GPS chip on my Mogul or on several Touch's I've updated for family members. I've always just fired up Google Maps and gotten a lock. I think some of the confusion might stem from the fact that it often takes quite a while to obtain the initial lock after the ROM/radio update. People might try Google Maps, but give up before it has time to get that initial lock. Then if you try GPS Viewer, you get the impression that it is doing more because it shows you the satellites that are currently being tracked. Either program will have the same time to lock, as it is the hardware and radio firmware that are doing all the work. They just display the data differently.

You are not "Priming" it with GPSGate, your operating it with GPSGate because GPSGate better emulates a COM port than the native one supplied with Windows Mobile.

Even if the GPS was "Primed" iGuidnace will not properly use COM4.

So yes, there is confusion.

Nothing needs priming. I think some tools just give better intermiediate progress towards a lock than others and it feels like better progress.

That said I think the Window Mobile API has a richer interface than the COM interface and apps that use that work better and are more stable. That's why I suggest folks that use GPSGate use "WM GPS" as input because other wise you are going through TWO levels of COM port emulation which is asking for trouble.

And if you use Google Maps don't use COM4. Leave it default and it will use the Windows Mobile GPS API which is more robust and gives app more control.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I have tried the mode setting on both 2 and 4, and I agree with mswlogo. When it is on 2 and i am in an area where i know i can't get sat's to lock on, google maps just sits there and does nothing. When i change it to 4 and soft reset, within about 5 seconds there is a blue dot within a half mile from where i am and about 20-30 sec after that its about 1-2 blocks from where i am. This is w/o any sat locks. So from what i can tell, 4 lets you actually "see" agps working while 2 seems to hide or ignore it.

While I do agree with you, I think it is also affected by the ROM you have installed and the GPS dlls.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

exactly, I set it to 4, and made sure that the rest of the settings are exactly the same as posted in that reg file, but Gmaps still puts me at 0,0 (close to Africa).
I have not installed the new DLL's yet. Will try that later and report my findings.
