Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I've tried qute a few combinations of Radios ROMs and OS ROM's and GPS DLL's but didn't believe I was getting "assisted GPS" because I either was in Nigeria with 0 Sats or Spot on with several Sats.

So I think with the Process of GPS DLL's mostly I tried GPSMode=4

GPSMode=1 Does not use Assist.
GPSMode=2 (Default) Uses Data (Assist) and Sats but is exclusive (not sure if Data link is up it can't use assist but when I use it, it does not assist).
GPSMode=4 Uses Data (Assist) and Sats not exclusive (might be less accurate during assist phase but it works).

So with a fairly stable ROM starting in Nigiera and Jumping to Spot on with GPSMode=2 I switched it to GPSMode=4 and bingo. While I wait for Sats I'm bouncing around my ZIP code getting slowly closer to my location but never spot on. Then the Sats come on line.

This mode is discussed in several threads (and probably baked in to some of the Cooked ROMS) but I thought it deserved it's own Thread. Especially for those using Stock AllTel ROM with nothing baked.

I attached a Registry Script of all my Registry GPS settings. They are stock settings expect for GPSMode change to mode 4.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

28 folks downloaded the script and not a single comment?

I have not seen any mention of this really critical setting in any FAQ yet there are 20 threads talking about "slow lock" in one form or another.

Double check this setting !!! It runs sooo much better.

I had tried this setting before but it didn't make any difference. I think the new GPS DLL's fixed it so now this setting really matters.

What are these new GPS .dll's you speak of? I was using JD's latest ROM up until yesterday, and I could get locks (but NEVER a 3d lock). I made my own ROM in the new kitchen and I can't get any locks, even with all the reg edits, priming with holux gpsviewer, etc.

See this thread for new DLL's http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25407

You may or may not need "Kickstart" depending on how your ROM is setup (Secure or Unsecured).

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

The reason this hasn't been in the main post in a sticky is because it hasn't actually been confirmed as working. It is discussed all over. Some people say aGPS isn't even working, while others swear that it is. Some people say 2 is no different than 4, while others say it makes a big difference.

I believe some of the custom ROMs have this change built-in.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I compared your reg settings with ghettofreeryder's ROM and they're the same. GPS start still takes 5-10mins(at worst) and I don't see anything to make me believe aGPS is functioning.

Only thing I haven't done is compare the DLL versions. Maybe that's the trick?

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I went from getting 10 minute locks to instant locks after making this change plus adding quickgps.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

I found this change in another thread and believe this is the most important fix to anyone not getting locks. I oriignally tried it with my first ROM (Mustang's) and the GPS worked well...due to other issues I went on to try OMG's, JD's, and my own cooked cooked ROM - with no GPS locks - I would VERY occasionally see 1 or maybe 2 sats and then a bunch of 0 sats. - I had forgotten to enable that GPS mode 4. Finally I recooked my own rom and made the reg setting change to 4 - and BINGO! it was night an day - 9, 10, 12 sats....After a day or so I may have to soft reset to regain GPS...but it comes back strong.

Best reg change I have found.

Re: Bingo !!! I finally have assisted GPS whoohoo

Using GPS mode as 4 sometimes gives me what I believe is aGPS, but sometimes I must wait a while. More testing is needed for me, but I subjectively think that GPS mode 4 helps.

The dlls on the other hand are not subjective and are phenomenal. I think alot of the people having problems need to upgrade to these dlls immediately. Perhaps the Custom ROMS out there already do this, but I was under the impression they were using the Mogul dlls originally posted. i dont think those dlls are being given enough attention by the community at large

EXACTLY... this is exactly the SAME THING THAT HAPPENS when that reg edit is set to 2. aGPS is not working. This reg edit doesn't make any difference.

your getting "instant" locks "night and day" because your WARM STARTING (not getting aGPS) your GPS... but when you try to re "COLD START" your GPS it isn't working, so you have to restart.

totally placebo.
