If you try and draw 900 mA from most 500 mA chargers (which is most of them on the market) they will work for a while, then shut down (ususally thermal protection) which does not reset until you cycle the power to them.

So the chargers may not actually be junk, just not designed to do the job you are using them for....
ok thanks for the info, any suggestions on a charger equivalent to the stock charger? I need travel chargers.

People will actively cool their phones, open the keyboard, etc, instead of making HTC or Sprint do something about this.

I am truly convinced that every since Touch Pro ever made (CDMA,) suffers from this same problem. People find tricks/workarounds to solve the issues, or are just lucky, and don't trigger the problem. I don't see how this could be a device-to-device defect. I would bet it's a design defect, or a software design problem.
Item 1:
Dead on, Look what happens each time that someone Starts a thread with either a utility to discern what is really happening with the devices (it gets buried in another thread), or you start a clean thread with information to help other take action (it gets closed). Too many people think that because they don't use the phone the way others do the problem does not exist or they just find ways around it and bury their heads in the sand.

Item 2:
With the comment from Cappy about the diamond (which is essentially the same unit) It is obvious that it is a hardware/software design problem. At PDA.net there are only 4 devices based on the Qualcomm MSM7501A processor. (VZW TP, Sprint TP and Dia, and Touch Dual) ALL of these have the same reported Issue, Poor Battery Life and Heat Problems.

For some reason, when the radios are in use, especially for extended periods the CPU and electronics get HOT. If your usage includes just using it as a PDA, Texting, Intermittent Data usage (i.e. web browsing), and short phone calls, I doubt you will ever see these issues. I have provided data that shows the high power usage (and subsequent heat generation) is ONLY associated with the cellular radios, NOT with the PDA side of the unit.

I will be the first to admit that during the first few days of usage, I had GREAT battery life (becuase I used it as described above) But once I actually started the work week, and I began using it as I needed it for business (the same way I used my previous PDA and Phone), I was lucky to go 6 hours off the charger.

But the ultimate point is: Heat is inefficiency either caused by a hardware or software defect. This heat issue, which is the root of all of the charging and battery life issue, has to be addressed. HTC and Sprint give a full spectrum of responses from "that has not been reported" to "that is being addressed" to "that has been reported but there is no issue to address" THAT is why I have documented the power usage. It is difficult to dismiss hard data as just speculation or perception.

Key thing to look for is a 5V, 1 amp output. Here is one that Expansys sells (just did a quick google for "usb ac adapter 1A") Never used it, but at $9.99 + shipping I'd give it a try...

I agree with you, too many people are fascinated by this 'work of art' created by HTC. I just want a phone that will work as advertised, especially when I paid $299.99 for this thing. I called HTC and was told it was a Sprint issue, when I called Sprint they offered to replace the phone. This is why I really need to know if its device specific, or if it has been happening with all the Touch Pros. It's a shame that this info is so hard to get, sooner or later it will become an issue for everyone though, it's better to act now before HTC decides to bring out a new line of phones to sprint and leave us all in the dust.

Re: Touch Pro Battery life!!! Post your reviews!!

I have intermittently noticed the same behavior. So I tried something interesting Last night. I turned the unit ON when I put it on the charger and DID NOT put it to sleep, I unchecked the "Turn Device off when not used for" box under "On External Power" on the Power settings Advanced tab (Std WinMo Power Panel) or Timer tab (nuePower panel). When I pulled the unit off the charger this morning Voila! no Immediate drop in battery level, After about 45 minutes (my commute time) it still showed 98%.

Re: Petition?: We need to get HTC to fix this heat/charging issue!!

I went to my local Sprint store and advised them I was having the same issue with overheating and lack of charging issues. I wrote numerous emails to ecare and all they could do for me is give me another battery. It helps for now, but still doesn't fix the issue at hand.

This is why I tried to make a DETAILED poll, as to whether or not people were truly ALL having these issues. I think it lasted about 5 minutes before it was closed. I am very curious in this myself. Most people say their phone is perfect, but I don't think they know where to look for these problems, or have never used a similar phone to compare. The touchscreen, for instance... if someone had never had a Touch before this phone, they would not know that it's ABnormal for the outer areas to be so insensitive... They wouldn't know that the phone shouldn't be that hot/etc.

I say inexperience is the reason this phone's problems are slipping under the radar.
