I kep seeing this cliche of GSM not having 3G service anywhere. I guess we can thank Verizon for the ads. The fact of the matter is, T-Mobile and AT&T have both been rapidly upgrading their networks. I know AT&T has problems in certain cities with too many users, but in most cities they are fine. And T-Mobile has good 3G service in just about all the major cities now, and is rolling it out to the rural areas (and they are rolling out 21 meg HSPA+, which is the best 3G in the nation).
GSM is still better than dial up even without 3G though. You still get EDGE pretty much everywhere, which is usually around 250-300k or so. So it's not like a real broadband speed, but it's still way better than dialup.
