Thanks - perhaps I'm just not being clear. Let's say I already have an EVO 4G. I already have a simply everything plan for unlimited everything $100 and I'm paying the $10 fee for new smartphones. Can I tether without paying an additional fee?

I don't care about Sprint's policy, my question is if I have a modified ROM such as this one - can I tether without incurring an additional fee.

yes many roms like omj's support workaround tethers
but be forewarned, if you go crazy with the data consumption, they could flag you and start watching what your doing to see if you are tethering with out paying, i wouldn't use it as my 'primary' connection at home imho

just as Av8or said, yes the Wifi Tether app allows free wifi tethering, but you must be rooted to run the app.

Thanks for the replies. No problem at all on the data. I know people here somehow manage to use several GIGs per month, I somehow only use 20-25MB per month even when I tether on my existing phone.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. For Froyo, prefer deodex, but I'll take either.
