This has a known serious bug with no reasonable workaround:

If you are signed in to Windows Live Messenger on your PC and your status is “Online” or “In a call” you could see interruption of push mail working on your device.

I use it. It's setup for you when you first run the "Windows Live" app, right? However, I'm afraid that it runs a persistent data connection to the internet causing a battery drain.

Yes, I did that, and it kind-of worked, but acted very buggy. The root problem, I think, is that IMAP wants to synchronize the header of every email message in the account; but Gmail keeps all email forever. Gmail's model is really just incompatible with all existing software.

Gmail provides a Java application for cell phones, but it's laughably brain-damaged. (It's meant for dumb phones, not Windows Mobile.)

As you can probably tell from the tone of this post, I have reluctantly decided to go back to my MSN account for email, even though it has its own problems. (MSN recently plunged me into an 18-hour email outage, which was the reason I switched to Gmail temporarily.)

I could live with a stand-alone Gmail application on Windows Mobile, but it would have to be native rather than Java and full-featured rather than brain-damaged.

If you don't mind an additional application, you might try Flexmail.

Re: Why not use push email?

I use nuevasync. I'm part of their private gmail-push beta. It looks promising, still needs some work though, but for the most part it works.

How's the nuevasync-via-exchange push solution affecting your battery life, Baffles?

Re: Why not use push email?

For those of you asking about SEVEN Beta Client. The best part about it for me is that I can connect to my work email using Outlook Web Access. My Iphone friends get soo mad that they cannot get their work email in its native format with attachements etc from work as our company will not allow Iphones on the mail serve. :P

Re: Why not use push email?

Like most have mentioned, push email eats up your battery. I have switched mine to every 20 hours. Now my battery will last over 24 hours; when set to push it wouldn't even last 6 hours.

Re: Why not use push email?

I use push email on my phone via Exchange server 2007 (and soon 2010)...

I'm not sure I understand the point of services like seven. You end up having a useless middleman in the mix. As the seven server will pool your real email server every 5, 10, 20, etc. minutes and then deliver what it finds to your phone instantly. You can setup your phone to do that delayed pull on its own.

Push email is only useful if the server your email is hosted on directly is capable of pushing it. Otherwise you don't have "instant" email and the whole ordeal is worthless.

Re: Why not use push email?

Yea I setup the sprint push mail with my yahoo account and I really dont see much of a difference from when I had the regular imap set to check every 15 minutes. Definitely isnt immediate though...
