How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

After reading through the many help files, especially yours, I took the "thrill" ride to upgrade my XV6800. Went pretty much uneventful. Some confusion in the bootloader process I think for many is if you come from the 6700 world you are so used to deactivating the USB connections in Activesync for flashing where the 6800 loader needs it. That's were I got scared...

After I flashed the new Sprint ROM, then the Kitchen Build of No2Chem 5060 I didn't have to reload any phone settings as you indicated. I did make a test phone call and received several calls from others afterwards. My data connectivity also worked fine. Set my Exchange Server info and synced all my contacts, calendar, and emails. So far, so good. To set this up, when I am at home, I am roaming in a USCellular area.

Traveling this morning to my workplace, I came into my cell home area with Verizon. After being "very well" in the home area, I was also getting the normal morning filling of my Inbox. Again so far, so good.

Then... I got my first phone call. One ring and that was it. Call ended by itself. When I tried to call the party back I got the evil "Phone not Authenticated" message. As you had eluded to, I called the number the message indicated to call and said I had done a hard reset. No issue with the CSR and they immediately took me through the process of loading a A-Key number. After that, life was and has been good...

So it looks like when the Verizon network seen me, wham-o!

So tell me how much better is the 6800 over the 6700, and what made you pick the 6800 over the 6900.
I have the 6700 now and do not know if I should get the 6800 or the 6900.

yep, had the same problem. i recommend trying different com ports in settings>system>external gps. try GPS program ports 3,4, or 5. or any of the other ones. under settings>system>external gps>(the tab) access, make sure its checked to manage automatically. you can also try google maps, (i personally do not use GPS view bc it sucks my battery) but make sure that under GPS settings, its set for windows to automatically detect it.

**also: you could update to dcd's 3.0.4. it works for me!

I had used the 6700 for 2 years and had been flashing with all the custom roms and finally the PPC Kitchen as of lately. I do use it for business purposes. Exchange Email and such. Also use the Remote Desktop program to attach to computers for user help when not with a laptop or other. Really had not had any problems with the 6700 except I have two batteries that were needing replacement. My 2 year contract was up, so I had some discounts to upgrade.

The Windows Moble platform was still a requirement for me as I have many purchased programs as well as some custom .Net programs ( I program Windows Mobile Industrial applications, mainly for barcode readers, mobile terminals, etc.). My business uses Verizon as our carrier. The need for a "real" keyboard pretty much limited me to the XV6800 as well as the need for WiFi. The XV6900 has neither.

I had already got to play with a Sprint unit from a friend and felt satisfied it was the way to go. I have only had the XV6800 for several weeks, but the OEM load from Verizon worked fine for everything I loaded it with. Battery life appears to me to be way better than my 6700 with original batteries.

I finally flashed the new Sprint ROM last week to get the GPS feature. I run between several states for my company and had been using Copilot version 6 on the 6700 with a Bluetooth GPS receiver. So far, Copilot seems to function fine with the Titan GPS hardware.

If you don't need the slideout keyboard or WiFi, I would think the 6900 would be a good choice. Of the reviews I have read, 75-80% are pro. The 6900 has more memory than the 6800 also.

I am getting my new XV6800 in a couple of days and am trying to get all my ducks in a row to upgrade to the Sprint GPS/Rev.A radio/ROM. I have read countless threads and feel I have a grasp on the whole process. The one question I have is how do I know when the customizations start to run? Is it obvious? How much time do I have to stop the process or reset the device? I would hate to be sitting there and all of a sudden, before I relize what has happened, the customizations ran..... That is my biggest fear so far. That and what appears to be the inevitable call to vzw for a new A-key.

Also, from my reading it appears that the sd card method of installing the ROMs is the easiest/safest. Any thoughts on that?

after everything is flashed cooked and synced, your phone will boot up. A window will pop up saying 'Customizations will run in 3 seconds. press any key' or something like that.... SOFT RESET RIGHT THEN AND THERE.
do not look away, do not go for coffee.. keep your eyes glued to the screen and watch for this message.
it WILL appear. large as day.. but if you blink, you can miss it. so PAY ATTENTION.

Yes, you will absolutley need to call Verizon for a new a-key.. this only will be required after you flash the new RADIO..all subsequent rom flashes, will NOT need a new akey.. just tell them you did a Hard Reset and now your phone doesnt work.. they won't ask any questions and will happily give you a new akey.. do NOT bother to write it down. it is NOT re-usable and you wont ever need to know what it is down the road.

flash from SD card is just a luxury. i'd recommend you flash the good ol way through active sync first, to get your hands dirty so you know the process..

buceyes, when you start up your phone after updating the radio ROM, do NOT go past the screen that says tap to begin. i went directly into the bootloader from there (camera, power, and soft reset). anyway, i dont recommend going past the tap to begin screen, even though you can. the first time i flashed it, i waited until it said customizing... but it still customized to at&t. had to get a refurb):

I did spend an hour or so working with Verizon on the internet issues. What we found out is that 1 or 2 of thier server validation sites were lagging out and/or just not authenticating with my service. It took several tries and a lot of patience on our end but we got it going.

Just make sure that when u call in that u ask for Tier 3 for support and create the ticket. They are 24hrs and have no time limit on fixing the issues.
