Hey Malatesta can you explain e-mail push?

Specifically can you explain why it saves battery life? Doesn't the phone need to be connected to the power vision to check for the mail from the server?

Mal isn't here right now, but I will try and explain for you.

PUSH email is a godsend. When you do not have push, outlook needs to log on, authenticate, scan the server, check for changes in the server's data, compare that to changes on the phone, then download, sign off, and display the messages. Activesync keeps track of the changes you make, and so does the exchange server used for PUSH. The whole "send/recieve" takes about 5 seconds when there is new data. No changes? About ONE second. Plus, lets say you set outlook to check for mail every hour. Now lets say you do not get an email for 2 hours. Outlook would have checked twice, PUSH never checked. Try it for one day, and you will see the difference.

I will tell a story also. I upgraded from 700w to wx. While at the sprint store, the girl was setting up my account. My # didnt work yet, but for some reason I could go online. I set up the server and downloaded all of my contacts, email, calendar, and task info before she finished the contract! She asked me if I needed numbers transferred, and I told her "I did it already." She did not understand how, and I didn't bother explaining it. Less than a minute to write all the info.

Yes, it keeps your connection IDLE, which means almost nothing as far as battery consumption. The SERVER initiates the sync, which is why you need the connection to be ALIVE, not ACTIVE, which are often confused for one another. Hope that explains it! Like I said, seeing is believing.

patmannyc nailed it.

Push uses I believe (roughly) 2.8% battery/hour which is quite efficient.

Make no mistake, it uses battery power but it's very little and worth it due to the convenience. When Exchange/push came out there were some battery issues which usually had to do with the server side "pinging" too much.

That's all been fixed now. Mail2web is a great example of superior service. 4smartphone as well.

In general, efficiency goes like this (leas to most)

pop3 --> imap --> imap/idle and Exchange push

Polling 'X' mins is less efficient than push or exchange.

Also, if you are concerned about battery life, pick yourelf up a Seidio 2400 mah battery (600 more than the standard). It's the same size as the stock and will add significant power to your device.

Mala/Patman...

Is the Exchange/Push server only for email? Or does it sync everything that a wired activesync session will do? And will I need to keep my PC on 24/7?

You don't need to have your PC on since your phone would sync with the Exchange server and not the computer.

Push syncs e-mails, contacts, calendar, etc.

Exchange is MORE than email, LESS than PC. It syncs calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, and mail. Nothing more. On your PC you can sync 3rd party software, media, etc etc. But once you setup an exchange your PC will disable syncing the fields that you sync with the exchange server automatically, to prevent duplicates. Its really cool, and VERY efficient, you really need to try it for a day and you'll never look back

You should check out http://live.mail2web.com

They offer a free 1GB exchange account with push email.

I highly recommend paying for the 1.99/mo plan though. Not only do they provide a dependable reliable service thats well worth 1.99/mo, but then you can also connect with a desktop outlook client.
