I was under the impression that your MSID was based on your phone number, not the phone. If the MSID is based on the phone and not the phone number, is there an app that will allow you to get your MSID like there is to get your MSL? If there is then this can completely bypass the aggravating process of calling into Sprint customer service to do an ESN swap. Last edited by DHarvey; 03-28-2008 at 12:20 AM. |

Re: Msid???
MSID is basically like a provisioning code issued by Sprints systems. It is specific to your line of service. It used to be the exact same as your phone number until number portability came about. It will have nothing to do with Verizon at all if you choose to go there. However, no matter what phone you have on Sprint, your MSID will remain the same - even if you change your actual phone number. Your MSL is specifc to the phone. Each phone has a different MSL.

MSID is "line of service" specific, not phone or phone number specific. That's what I needed to know. I have the MSL reprogrammed to accept provisioning from other carriers as well as making it easier to remember. Using Qualcomm's QPST tool, I made my MSL 000000. So say I decided I wanted to take my black Sprint Touch over to Verizon later on, all I would have to do is flash an OEM Verizon ROM to my device and then call up Verizon and they will give me the MSID, port over my number from Sprint, and I will be able to activate it on their network? |

Re: Msid???
I suppose, I don't know how Verizon does all that. I know that they tell their customers that if they have an unlocked CDMA phone that they can bring it over to VZ, but they generally tell them that Sprint has to unlock it - yeah right. I'm sure you can figure all that out on your own, but don't expect any help from either company on that part. As long as you have it 'unlocked' they will just port your number over, and if they use MSIDs too (which they probably do) they'll give you a new one from their systems.

As far as "unlocking" goes, all you need to do is set your MSL to all 0's so that it will accept provisioning from other carriers. I read about this and then tried it first hand. My friend is on Altell so I reprogrammed my 6700's MSL to 000000 just like my Vogue and then flashed a custom Altell ROM from the kitchen I downloaded and then had my friend try to activate it on Altell and they activated it no problem. I can only assume that Verizon would be able to do the same if I do the same to my Sprint Touch. |

Re: Msid???
actually, im pretty sure neither sprint or vz will activate even if it's unlocked.. they have different codes that the system won't recognize what kind of phone is it, and i doubt they would "register" the code on their system. what if the phone was stolen.

I have read about and personally activated a Sprint PPC-6700 on Altell's network. It's not hard and they will do it. The only thing I can think of that would make this impossible would be if the carrier does not also offer that phone. I know Verizon will be offering the Touch as the XV6900 within months so that will no longer be an issue. All CDMA carriers in this country, to the best of my knowledge, use the MSID programming system. Yes their MSID codes may be different from those used on other carriers systems but if you unlock the phone, flash an OEM OS(custom works as long as you select the carrier you are using) from the carrier you are trying to switch to and make sure your MSL has been sucessfully, permanently, changed to 000000, your phone can and will accept other carriers provisioning. In the end it is all up to the carrier whether or not they will actually do it but seeing as how Altell will do it, I see no reason why Sprint or Verizon wouldn't.
