Re: What's the best backup program?

OK. I did a bunch of testing last night, I ran out of time but I got some really surprising results.

I got the new TP yesterday & immediately unlocked it (as soon as I made sure it worked). As I've stated, I have both SPB BU & Sprite. After using both in the past, I always preferred SPB & lately I didn't even have Sprite installed. Since I wanted to test both however, I downloaded & installed the latest version of Sprite on my current LOADED TP. This was a newer version than I had used in the past.

I am a VZ customer & previous to this I used a couple xv6800's that I used to reflash constantly. I did this first to enable the GPS & later to speed them up & get around the low memory problems. I had SPB BU files that I would restore after a flash. These BU files where FULLY loaded with apps & SPB always restored them perfectly.

Now, I am running a Sprint TP that I flashed to the leaked VZ ROM & activated on VZ & it runs fantastic. The GPS & everything else works perfectly & it is very fast with virtually no TF3D lag etc etc

I like to make full all around use of my systems & I use GPS with a bunch of different apps/Sirius radio/Slingbox Mobile w-200 cable TV channels/SMS-Chat W-TouchPal/five different email accounts/ripped DVD movies to a 16 gig card/over 300 mp3 music files etc etc etc etc etc

I have every cool app & tweak I can think of & I'm not about to reinstall all this stuff after a ROM flash & that's why SPB has always worked so well for me.

Last night, I made BU files from my current TP 10 minutes apart from both SPB & Sprite so they should be virtually identical (I immediately noticed Sprite takes a LOT longer). I started flashing different ROM's to the brand new TP & then restoring the SPB BU file. I used the SPB file first because that is what I'm more familiar with & it has never failed me.

Much to my surprise, the restores did not work well AT ALL. SPB comes up in the "upgrade ROM" restore mode by default unless you have made no changes but the only significant changes you can make are to "overwrite all files" or not. I tried it both ways just out of curiosity. My current system has modified TF3D files (doesn't everybody??) & in NOT ONE of the SPB restores would TF3D run properly. TF3D was either all messed up, or got stuck in an endless "click here to load TF3D" loop & refused to load at all.

I couldn't believe it, I must have done 10 restores in a row & every single one failed in one way or another.

At that point, I was running short on time but decided to do one more for the night & flashed the phone to one of scott scrosler's ROM's & then tried out the Sprite BU. Sprite gives you more options to choose from on restore which is a little confusing so I read the help file (novel idea there). The help told me if it was a different physical device with a different ROM, on restore use merge option 2 so that's what I did.

I was amazed on the first boot this time. Not only did TF3D load just fine, except for one detail it looked absolutely perfect. I do not use the HTC task manager as I prefer Wisbar Adv3 & its cascading start menu + the million other options it has & I noticed WB wasn't running (it auto loads on startup). When I clicked in WB, I got a dll error so that needs to be reinstalled, but other than that I couldn't find a single thing that didn't work & work right.

That was the end of the testing last night, but back at it tonight. Stay tuned for more results.

~John

Re: What's the best backup program?

Sprite backup is doing good for me. Even when moving to a new replacement Touch Pro, flawless restore.

Hbenz2008, I gave Resco Backup a try, but noticed it threw up some errors when trying to backup some files, is that normal?

I'm not giving up on SPB yet, it has worked too well for too long for me to do that. I am certainly baffled by what it did to me last night however.

I don't know what went wrong, maybe the BU file was corrupted but it did say it completed successfully. I am going to BU my current system again & try the SPB option again tonight to see if I can figure out what's going on.

I know one thing, I used to swear that SPB was better than Sprite (I sure stated it on this forum enough times). I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong however & I was DEFINITELY wrong on this. Sprite just went WAY UP in my eyes..........

Darnell:
Not really, I rarely get any error with Resco. You can actually click each error and try to remedy the conflict. Was that the first back up you did? or was it a back up update?

It was my first attempt at a backup using Resco. Feature wise, I would have rather kept Resco, I think Resco has the best features overall, but seeing the errors I didn't want to take any chances. So I went and tried Sprite, which is to me #2 in terms of features and worked fine, plus I had Sprite back when I had a Treo 800w. If not for the errors with Resco, I'd probably be using it now. When looking at the files Resco could not back up, it seemed nothing could be done about it and I had no clue what those files are used for or if they were not really needed.

I don't think any of the backup programs are bad, it just really depends on the features someone needs and if it test out OK for them. (Try before you buy .)

Some things Resco Backup has that Sprite and some other backup programs do not

(If anything I've mentioned below is in Sprite backup, I have never seen it.)

Well, Resco has things such as incremental backups, which Hbenz2008 was asking about and I don't find that the concept of incremental backups exists at all in Sprite backup. (Incremental backups being a backup that provides updates for an already existing full backup file with changes made on the device since the previous backup.)

Resco also allows for a separate means to verify a backup file.

Resco allows to do a compare between a backup file and the device. To do things like see if the backup and the device are in 100% agreement or because of changes on the device if a new backup is nessesary.

Resco allows for comparing of 2 seperate backup files for differences.

Resco also has a means to track registry changes.
