Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

As far as which is easier, liquid or powder... If you put it into a 2-liter bottle or similar where the cover will fit well, there shouldn't be any difference. Check my post a bit earlier. I didn't need to do any buffing other than the mandatory "let's see what buffing does", and the phone looks awesome.

This one shows some of the purple because of the flash, but I guess it's more like the one above.

As much as I would never dye my covers colors like purple, the way they come out makes me want them!

That's the powdered Royal Blue. I dissolved about 1/8th of the powder or less into 2 cups of water that was microwaved until it felt a little bit hotter than what comes out of my tap. I measured the temperature to be at around 126 degrees. I then soaked it, taking it in & out for stirring, for approximately 20 minutes.

Further tips:
Use electrical tape on the inside of the cover to protect the flash & lens openings from being dyed a bit. (although if this happens, supposedly you can put in hot clear water to get rid of the little dye that attached itself to that plastic.)

Use the same method for the outside to protect the flash & lens openings.

If you notice any spots not as dark as the rest of the cover, reheat some of your dye water and use a toothpick or similar to put a dot of the dye onto that spot alone. Wait a minute or more depending on how much lighter it was, rinse, repeat as necessary.

Similar to above: I noticed that the part between the black plastic and the raised area around it wasn't dyed very well, so I reheated a small amount of the dye, and used a toothpick to carefully get the dye into that area only (like a moat!), cleaned up any excess, and let it sit overnight. Now that area is dyed as well. (This did not work for the inside of the battery cover).

If the temperature of the dye water seems to have cooled off significantly (It did for me because I was doing this in plastic container), heat up some water in a larger container, and put your dyeing container onto that so that the heat transfers into your dyed water mixture without worrying about changing the intensity of the dye.

Hope I've been of help!

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Here is my adventure when trying to do this.

As you can see I started off with a goldish colored cover with darker corners. I guess this is from using the case.

I tried to do Royal Blue like platin465. But it came out as a light purplish color. I did not like that so I out the dye back on the stove at 2-3. and added a bit more dye. (I was using the powdered dye). After 10-15 more minutes with the stove on it adsorbed all the dye that it could. I also noticed dye clumping around the lenses. I used more dye that the water could dissolve. Should have used the liquid, because I cannot follow directions.

I also found that if you use enough dye it will dye both sides.

I was not pleased with the results. My color was blotchy

After drying I went to place the cover on my phone and noticed that it had shrunk. I did not think that the cover would fit. It was short by 1-2mm on the side. But I centered it and pushed it down and it clicked into place. One benefit was that the creek from the battery door is gone.

As stated before the colors were blotchy. Also leaving it in there too long turned the cover black. Not what I wanted, but its better than gold.

I used a polishing wheel, like one that comes with a dremel, or knock off dremel.

This is my end result.
