Re: Petition?: We need to get HTC to fix this heat/charging issue!!

I'm getting my TP on Monday, and I'm scared *hitless about this being a big issue. I'm coming from the Mogul and am happy to get rid of it, and was hoping to come to a near perfect phone.

I am definitely a "Power" user, and will put the phone through the gauntlet for the sake of this thread. I'm really anal-retentive about the phone's power draw, and have always watched it closely. I'm assuming I'll have a newer build date than some of you getting it new directly from Sprint. maybe we can make a correlation.

After reading all 17 pages of this thread, there are a couple of things that have piqued my interest:

1) The poster that mentioned his battery was 95 and his radio area was 114

2) The poster that mentioned he had two TP's side by side with similar usage, one gettting hot and one not as much, and then the subsequent people telling him to swap the batteries to see if that was the difference. I'm interested to see if that plays out, so I'll add my +1 to that as well

3) I've had mogul roms that had the back of the unit hotter than others during heavy usage, attributed to different radios. That leads me to believe that there's some sort of hope with this issue.

4) one poster mentioned that the radios drew up to 10X the power they transmit, horribly inefficient and hopefully the culprit. I hope Sprint and HTC can either change the manufacturing process if it's a hardware thing, or make a radio that somehow behaves differently.

I'm guessing that this is an issue not with the battery at all as some others have echoed. I think it's a problem solely with the radio, and that the residual heat is what's causing the battery protection to trip.

I think you missed the point about radio power. The maximum that the units radio can will produce is 0.29W That is the Specification that HTC gave to the FCC. So regardless of any conditions, the Radio is transmitting 0.29W MAXIMUM. My question is: Should it required 2W of battery power to generate that 0.29W of Microwave energy to transmit to the tower?

If you are willing, would you consider installing the battery logging diagnonsitcs in this post (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...382#post511382) and post your results once you get your TP? (It does generate a sizeable log file that you will have to slug through, or if you like you can PM me and I can summarize and report.)

Ive done about the same as you, a couple full drains and full charges. It seems like the battery life is finally stable.

Being on the net seems to be just as much as a drain if not more than talk time. I make sure to disconnect after every session using long press end button. The more i use this phone, the more i like it, i cant wait to load a custom rom, but its going to be hard to part from all my current programs and customization. ps, typed from my tp!

Palladium, can you post the email that you sent out to Sprint/HTC here? So we can use that same email to send from our end? I think this issue needs to be addressed by more people than just you and me, maybe we can get OP to update his post with it.

Ok so that there is no missunderstanding. I just talked with my wife about her phone and she has no had any heat issues. Neither have I. Now that does not mean that there is not any heat at all. I have used the phone without bluetooth (just holding it) for approx. 1.5 to 2 hrs and have not had any excessive heat. I have been able to use the windows media player for several hours at a time with no dramatic impact on my battery. Typically when making a long call usually 2+ hrs. the phone is not on the charger. I do usually use bluetooth for long calls and again have not had any real problems. I am coming from the original HTC Touch so I know something about ppc phones. So far this phone has been far better than my old Touch. I am sorry to see that so many people are having problems with these phones, however, it would be interesting to see how many people who don't frequent these forums are also having problems. Impossible I know but wish we could get a better idea of just how widespread the problem is.

I have attached the body of the letter that I sent. It is attached as a PDF. I would suggest that anyone that uses it, adjust the information to fit their circumstances.

WOW! I just got off a 1.5 hr confernece call (actually I was forced off since my battery went dead...), but had to switch to speaker phone about 1 hr in because the phone was so hot it was uncomfortable to hold to me ear! I really wish that I had THAT Phone!!!!

Re: Petition?: We need to get HTC to fix this heat/charging issue!!

One thing I can say after reading about HTC devices over the past year is this-- it always takes them a couple firmware updates to get the radios right on the Sprint versions. No wonder the Mogul always had hacks to get the Alltel radios installed.

I wonder, then, is it actually an HTC problem where they aren't programming the radios right and it takes them some tweaking and tinkering between Sprint, Verizon, and Alltel to get it right... or is Sprint's signal just bizarre enough to gum up the works? Or both?

I do know that mine is dated 10/26/2008, and I have yet to experience the overheating issue on calls, although, I also admit that I haven't had my phone on a call for longer than a half hour yet. Most of my work is data related, so that's just how it is. However, I definitely do NOT have the charging issues either I plug it in, and it charges no matter what the source (PC via USB or AC adapter). When it hits 100% like it is right now, it stops charging and sits there like it's supposed to.

I'm not one to blatantly discredit complaints without being a witness, especially since the data has been presented in favor of the complaints, but I do stand by the fact that it's probably a just a matter of them releasing a radio firmware update and life moving on. In which case, all these complaints will notify them of the problem, but not necessarily make them produce it any faster.

PS: Too bad I don't have anyone that I can actually stand to talk to for an hour to test it out on mine to see if I experience the overheating issue for extended calls. (Translation: Too bad nobody likes talking to me on the phone, lol.)
