Re: Too many roms!

If every ROM is a good ROM, and actually has something to bring to the table, I'm all for a variety of something special. And if you can't find something that works for you, there's always the option of a Kitchen (I recognize that "easy" kitchens are not widely available yet for this device, but give it some time. Plus there are tools if you're willing to get your feet wet, same way as most of these chefs)- Then you can make it yourself to suit YOU. But when there is a plethora of heavily customized ROMs for a niche user group... well, if I hadn't been around WM long enough to love it, I'd try a few ROMs, find all sorts of "surprises" that have replaced features I'm used to, get frustrated and pack up and call WM a lost cause. The purpose in starting this thread, if any, was to hopefully catch the eye of someone who feels this way, and tell them that perhaps they are justified. DON'T GIVE UP ON WM JUST BECAUSE SOME CHEFS DIDN'T FINISH TWEAKING THEIR ROMS! You CAN have a totally rock-solid WM experience, I've proved it to people! However, if we all followed what is popular, most of us would have been convinced that the iPhone is the greatest device in the history of mankind. I mean, how could THAT much market share be wrong?! Clearly we all need to sift through and form our own opinions. Just following a thread that has a lot of reviews and positive feedback (from users you've never seen before, especially) doesn't mean that its actually a good ROM. Quote:
Not exactly, MadCow. There were dozens of Roms, but they were built off of 2 or 3 major ROMs. No2Chem was famous for building rock solid rom bases with not much in them. If you wanted to customize your own ROM, his was the one to use. If you wanted to load up a ROM full of features, you'd take No2Chem's and kitchenize it and release as a NueRom-based-feature rom. If you didn't like something, you could always go back no2chem's base and start over yourself. The current scene, I'm sorry, feels like an awful mess. Options are good, I agree. But at some point it becomes counter-productive... And the comment-diarrhea syndrome (OMG BEST ROM EVER!) is making it hard to tell good from bad. Quote:
I guess I could have written it better, but I something like this should be required viewing for any fresh blood on the site, IMO. Quote:

Re: Too many roms!
I love the variety. The only thing I would like changed is all the ascii garbage & the "coming soon" posts. If you have a ROM, Name it, place the information in the title & post it. I don't need you sticking Christmas lights on it, wrapping it in colored cellophane, dousing it with hairspray, and proceeding to light it on fire (TP1 ROM forums). I generally tend to stay away from those ROMS.
If you have a ROM you plan on releasing in he next 6 months, I don't see a reason to create a thread about it. Perhaps a day or 2 in advance to get the Idea out there, but there are too many "Coming soon!!!!" threads that never amount to anything other than placeholders for black holes. I love this community & the cooks here are awesome. There is something for just about everyone. If you don't like sorting through all the stuff there are tutorials on how to complete your own personalized ROM (which is awesome) so you never have to visit the ROM forum to figure out what is best... Now in reference to the first post I suppose I must say.... I use Energy &- "OMFG, THIS IS THE BEST ROM EVER AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I EVAR USED N-E-THING ELSE!"

Re: Too many roms!
Ooh........MOD FIIIIGGGGHHHHHTT!!!!!!! lol but seriously too many Roms and not enough developing going into these things. I mean I could slap a few things in a kitchen, add a custom startup/ wallpaper, manila 2.1 and call it "RR196 Ultra grenade decepticon M16 007 Michael Bay *explosions* rom" hmm actually on 2nd thought maybe I should. What do you guys think?

Re: Too many roms!
LOL- good one, SolApathy. Well said.
And Ricoh, I would download your ROM and post how much I love it before I even tried it. |

Re: Too many roms!
Perhaps PPC geeks or posters could post new roms and rom updates more clearly and with pictures so I dont have to look into each post to see which rom I will use
