I would also say the phone is pretty rugged. I must've dropped mine like 3 dozen times on tile/concrete/asphalt. Still works like it would outta the box, albeit with some scratches. Only problem I could see using your TP2 w/ Garmin XT on a long backpacking trip would be the battery issue coming into play.
I never mentioned data plan, so there's nothing I said there to agree or disagree with.

I did mention battery life, which sounds like you do agree with.

WOW - are you a lucky person, dropping it that many times and no screen damage!

I'll state my opinion one last time, then will be happy to discuss the software only. I would not recommend using Garmin XT on a phone under the following conditions:
- off-road, hiking, or other locations where getting lost could be serious, because
-- a. The TP2 is relatively fragile compared to a standalone unit
-- b. Standalone units have lower and more predictable battery consumption and it's easy to take a handful of rechargeable AA's.

My message was about purchasing it, which is all that we're allowed to talk about here. I know there are other ways to get Garmin XT on your phone, but there's a pretty strict policy against discussing those methods here. It's not on Garmin's site as a product for WM anymore. As far as I can tell, the product is no longer sold by Garmin or most major resellers. And if you do find someone still selling it, it'll most likely be with outdated maps that you'd need to update separately.

Kaos Do you mind sharing the link or the cab to the software?

Thanks

Re: TP2 + Garmin XT

The major problem with XT is the fact that to get it to run on your TP2 you have to:

1) Pull the case off
2) Take the back off
3) Pull the MicroSD card that has your programs installed on it
4) Insert the XT card (Don't misplace your other card)
5) Put the back cover on
6) Put the case on

And after you get where you are going, then you have to reverse it to replace your own SC card. If they would put it on a 16 or 32gb card it would be fine, but the biggest (At least when I bought it) was 4gb. I have over 8gbs of music on my card, not to mention the cabs to just about everything I have installed or installed at one time or the other on my 16gb card. I know there is a Hack to make it work on your bigger card, but dang I lost that email that had step by step instructions. Someday I will find the instructions again and put it on my new 32gb card, but until then I will keep using Igo8.

I have GarminXT running on my phone....and never pulled the 16gb card out.
I copied all files from GarminXT SD to my normal SD card.

Works like a charm and I am running latest 2011.10 maps as well.

Really? Last time I did that it didn't work, it gave me a warning, but that was on my TP1, I wonder if that made a difference? Because the version I have looked for the cards serial number and wouldn't operate on any card but that one. I know the hack included a program to read you current card serial number so you can edit a file and enter that number instead. Oh well, I guess maybe I will look into it again.

all you have to do is go to garmins site and type in garmin xt. it was last updated for program 5.20W in 08 listed as final version. its still on their site. as for updating maps. they still support it.Its up datable through map source for a fee.so to say its no longer up datable or only able to be done is by illegal means is bull sh!t. you don't know what your talking about.Map source doesn't care what it is as long as its garmin based. xt nuvi what ever map source will update it.

wrong you can transfer it from the xt card to your other sd card you just need a usb card reader or sd card adapter with the adapter place tape over the side. removed the unable to copy restriction. then move it . I moved mine to my 16gb micro sd with no issues that way.

Is it fun being a jacka$$?

Look, the number one result when you do what you suggested is a 404 error. Literally, it's an actual link to http://www8.garmin.com/products/mobilext with the title "404 error". Garmin has discontinued the product, so to someone who doesn't currently have it, they have to find a retailer that still has it, pay for it, then pay separately for map updates. I'm not looking to get in a flame war here. I was responding to a poster asking about how to know whether the copy he was looking to purchase would have the latest maps. My answer was that it won't, and that is correct.
