Unlike Goog maps, bing.. you DON"T need the internet, so if you use it for hunting or fishing in Bummm F Egypt like I do... the others don't work, as there are no towers to pull their maps down. I must have basemaps & detail maps (logging roads, etc) ON my SD card, 8 miles back on the great divide you won't get squat for a tower...

I turn all radios off (airplane mode), set backlight to lowest & bring an extra battery, lasts for many days.

Re. tower questions above.. 3 ways to get GPS signal
1. tower triangulation (location btwn 1/5 mile & 1/2) (poor) (No GPS chip in phone)

2. GPS chip in phone
3. Using both (TP2) (faster)

Faster yet:
And you can assist satellite lock in with progs "QuickGPS" which downloads all sat locations from internet every week & uses phone as a computer to assist fast GPS lock in based off anticipated/estimated satellite locations (from downloaded satellite tracking data). AND, using AGPS check box in settings/other
Wonderful explaination... thanks for sharing / educating.

Cheers!

I second this. If Im talking on the phone the TP2 cant update the map from the internet using google maps. Also I live on the big island of Hawaii and its Bumm F Egypt so most of the time I cant even call using the phone. I rely on Garmin XT. I tryed tom tom with my last 2 ppc but it was too buggy. It had a few GREAT options garmin is missing. Visa Versa

its about 1gb total. the map is like 980 mgs i think. You can delete the extra languages once installing though to get another 40 mgs or so back.

XT comes with US basemap included. Contains: Freeway, Highways, big stuff. If you want detailed maps (cities), and yes, you do...

You need to buy the CD... and you know the capacity of a CD. But, you only need to download the areas you want. If you are an inner city guy, total space is the metro area, a few megs... most just download their state to their ppc... live in Cali or R.I? .... if you divide 1 gig by 50 states... & you only download 1 state... well you do the math. You probably don't need a new SD card... There are downloads all over for this for free, but that determines what & who you are and your personal integrity.. I've spent a LOT of money on GPS's & software with Garmin over the years, my last one dropped & bust the screen right after I got it, had the CD and everything... they wouldn't do anything.... a few hundred down the drain... will let you guess what I did..

People need to quit dreaming about bigger SD cards imo.. Yea, they've got 32Gb, 8 now under $20 if you look hard, and 4 gigs for nothing. NoNE of that matters... best bang 4 buck right now=8g C6

MOST IMPORTANT! Get a class 6 SD card. Anything over 2Gb is rated by class, if you can't either see it or the seller doesn't advertise it.. guess what? it's a class 2 (C2). C6=6Mb/s, C4=4Mb/s, C2=2 Mb/s, so yes a C6 is 3 times as fast! All your maps and program is on the SD card for XT.

Re: TP2 + Garmin XT

I think Garmin XT is the best GPS package for use in phones - and in short, casual situations where you don't have phone coverage.

I would NEVER depend on XT in my phone for longer periods out of phone range, where getting lost would be more serious. Phones are fragile, etc, etc. In those situations, I always use a handheld Garmin unit, and take a lot of rechargeable AA batteries.

Not sure if I'm one of the "nuts" you refering to.

But if so, my comment above was not directed at the suitability of the XT SW for hiking, etc - yes, it's just fine for that. My comment was directed at the suitability of a relatively fragile phone with a very fragile screen for rugged use where you are truly relying on GPS to get home.

Peace.
