Re: **ATTENTION CHEFS** HTC "Enhancements" vs Performance
It's not a currently developed ROM, but it doesn't get much more barebones than this:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=103045 I tried it and it was super fast, but took a lot of tweaking. Try it out if you want to add just what you want. Also, it doesn't come with HTC Enhancements installed |

Re: **ATTENTION CHEFS** HTC "Enhancements" vs Performance
Currently, Blackout ROM is the fastest of the 6.1 bunch, and it comes sans some HTC window dressings, but it doesn't come without its downsides. Performance is excellent, apart from one problem. Ye olde evil vibrate bug. It vibrates on key presses on the software keyboard, and lags when it does. If I knew how to fix that, it would be stupendous!

I doubt this 6.5.x screen would exist on a win6.1 rom.

Re: **ATTENTION CHEFS** HTC "Enhancements" vs Performance
i just know i ran 6.1 on TP2 till 6.5 was offically released and i never had issue with vibration on screen/keyboard presses... so, theres obviously some way in 6.1 to disable it

Seriously though, what I've done is nothing compared to the big names in Roms these days. I normally stay behind the scenes, except for an occasional appearance on the PPCG podcast- as for my Titan tutorial, it used to exist here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=101502, however the methods changed after the GPS radio was revealed, and the old way would actually brick phones if done accidentally. Someone else stepped up with a more up-to-date tutorial for GPS roms, and it was decided that mine should be deleted to prevent any more "accidents". Still, there's plenty of tutorial/in depth threads that I've started, such as the HTC Video Playback Bible (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=57282) or older kitchen-related tuts (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=48582) which I've even found quoted on other blogs/forums (xda, smartphonejunkie, etc). The old timers around here remember me. I feel like PPCG is like the cast of SNL... always new characters popping up with each change of the seasons, and some of the new ones barely have a connection to the old ones, but there are a few faces that span generations. But again, I'm not here to brag- what I've done here is small in comparison. I'm just here to share some ideas I had and hopefully help unite other like-minded users. ***BACK ON TOPIC*** I tried that NRG Titanium rom. Its a step in the right direction, but there are still things there I'd like to try leaving out. I'll put together a brief summary of the "enhancements" I'm referring to: HTC Notification bar - This is the screen you see when you click the top bar. On classic WM, when you click an icon on the top you are brought to an information window immediately. For example, an SMS icon on top would give you a little bubble with the text of your message on the bottom of the screen. You can then click to delete, ignore, or mark as read, all without leaving your current screen. Currently, with the HTC notification screen, not only do I suspect the system responds slower, but I also notice it takes unnecessary extra steps to clear notifications. For example, when using A2DP, a message about stereo volume control pops up in the notification bar. I click it, am brought to a new HTC screen that lists notifications. From there, I have to click the message from Bluetooth, which will eject me back to the previous screen, then show the message on the bottom in a window with a "dismiss" button. Why couldn't I have been presented with that first, and skip the whole HTC screen?! Volume bar- When adjust the volume, it used to be that you would press the vol up or down keys, and a little volume window would pop up right under the icon in the top bar, and move when the key presses. Yes, this is NOT as finger friendly, but are you using your fingers to adjust the volume? Aren't you using the volume buttons?? Classic WinMo would never make you leave your current screen just to adjust the volume. I find that in some applications, the full screen volume gets in the way and actually takes a moment to come up, and then you have to leave it for a moment to go away again. Unnecessary. HTC Messaging- You all know what this is. Its the one that's NOT the WinMo sms screen, that you get when texting directly from a contact (or through sense). This can be avoided by not using Sense and accessing sms from outlook/email inbox. But it would be nice to have it OUT OF THE SYSTEM so that it doesn't come back to haunt you when you compose a new sms from the htc contact screen. Contacts/ New Contact / Phone Canvas- Ok, this is a tough one. I prefer the classic speedy response WinMo contacts manager than the HTC one. The problem is, even on roms like this Energy Titanium rom, when you enter a new phone number and want to save it, it will jump to an HTC skinned new contact screen. This screen for some inexplicable reason, tends to get VERY laggy, and sometimes I've found myself counting the seconds going by before it is ready for input anything. This is because it is attached to the phone canvas, the dialer that HTC uses. Now here is my dilemma- I have not seen what the dialer looks like on our current handsets without phone canvas, but recall that in Windows Mobile 5, without a phone canvas it would look like this: I'm all for efficiency, but that dialpad is downright UGLY. I wonder what the dialer would look like on 6.5 (or even 6.1)... I think Microsoft may have updated its stock dial pad. But again, I don't know how well it would work compared to the Phone Canvas we're all used to, with the buttons and sliders. The Phone Canvas is also responsible for showing the bluetooth icons on the notification bar, as well the data arrows I think. So, there may need to be compromises made here... phone canvas, or quick response time. I'm not sure where I stand on this, and would actually like to hear from any chef who's tried if there are any... Now, in all honesty, I've started to grow fond of Cookie's Home Tab. So, ironically, when all is said and done, I would love to get a Manilla home screen- but without any of HTC's other "enhancements". I'm honestly really skeptical as to whether or not this can be done, as I understand Sense is deeply integrated into those other plugins. Plus, whatever performance gains we got by omitting those might be negated by having Sense in. I don't know, and the only way to know is to experiment... Anyway, I must get back to work here, just wanted to share...

Re: **ATTENTION CHEFS** HTC "Enhancements" vs Performance
last night i disabled sense and god i love my phone so much more...more than when im in android. i'm running a month or two? old MightROM and had the GTX stuff going too but honestly, the only "enhancement" i need in addition to the windows Today menu (which surprising looks appealing...I'll post a screen later to see what you think) is S2U2. and best of all, despite its simplicity, it's extremely functional/practical as far as quickly and reliable doing what i need to do.
i'm extremely content with my phone right now which hardly ever happens after seriously pulling all nighters getting it to work the way i need. |

Re: **ATTENTION CHEFS** HTC "Enhancements" vs Performance
While I agree that the HTC skinning has compromised performance..........I also would like to add blame to the chipset performance!! HTC has tried almost too hard to make Windows Mobile friendlier.......The work they put in to make Capacitive work with Windows Mobile is a huge example. Also the MSM7XXX chipsets have been around for a while.
I have played with the Netripper overclocking tool and it makes the TP2 feel new and alive - until it hangs......STRUGGLE But if the overclocking can get finalized I think the speed/responsiveness issues will become a moot point. Running at 710Mhz or faster gives me excellent responsiveness from the on screen controls; and browsing lists and opening programs is so fluid. And this is with Energy's CHT with Dinik Glass. |
