My points are simple:

1: A carrier supplied data connection over free WiFi is not “technically” or more better put “mechanically” needed for a very large amount of people to get a tremendous amount of usage from a device such as the TP2.

2: For those that it is necessary for, yes a data connection is great but that this should be a optional thing not a mandatory thing and to force it on those for whom it is not needed is wrong.

Simply put the bottom line is, make it an optional not a mandatory thing which is entirely possible to do without issue and let the customer decide what they want based on there needs.
i could go along with that as long as those who don't get data plans don't get the phone subsidy.

I haven't heard of people getting a good response at running Playstation Network or XBOX Live very successfully over a 3G phone connection or otherwise due to the poor ping factor. Some fellow gamers are pissed when your lag causes problems
isn't xbox 360 a monthly service??? if you can pay for that, you can pay for the data on a smartphone. or downgrade really.

I purchased my phone off a local classified ads message board. Someone else paid the subsidy. My first TP1 the same way. That's why I was pissed at Verizon when I went to hook it up to replace my Samsung i760 and they informed me my bill would be $30 more a month in which I told them essentially to shove it......
I had no idea they made some new rule about it when since 2005 through 2009 on my Samsung i730 & i760's I NEVER was required to have a data plan. You'd figure Verizon would just let me continue on since these two phones are along the same lines as the Touch Pro's really. Both are PDA phones, can use data, have similar features.
IT'S JUST VERIZON'S WAY OF GETTING MORE MONEY OUT OF PEOPLE THAT WANT TO UPGRADE THEIR PHONES.

I don't give a nickle to Microsoft for their 360 Live service. I pulled the LAN cable on my unit 1 year or so ago so it wouldn't have to be online ever. I rarely play it honestly. Last game was Tales of Vesperia cause it was exclusive (at the time) so I went out and bought it and played it through.
I use my two Playstation 3's extensively though. Lots to do there! PSN is FREE and lots of great software out and coming. My daughter plays the heck out of Little Big Planet and I don't receive a bill from Sony for the online features.

why not take your business elsewhere then??? sprint and t-mobile have much cheaper plans and sprint's coverage is great. t-mobile is getting better.
since you didn't buy the phone through them (at which time they would have told you that data plan was required), you are free to change carriers. you could go back to one of those old phones as well.

Listen, i get your frustration, but that is where cell phone companies in the USA are headed. they have spent dearly on upgrading their networks and want to get their money out of it.
come to sprint, i pay 130/mo for 3 phones, 3k min, unlimited everything else. actually considering dropping the minutes since sprint went to all mobile to mobile and we don't use that many anymore.

I did, to Page Plus Cellular which is still technically Verizon. The purpose of this thread was to discuss the "mandatory" reasons for Verizon making people pay for something they didn't need or want. The thread didn't really have anything to do with the ability of a user being able to afford the service or not.
I'm plenty happy with the voice/text part of Verizon which is where I feel they deserve my dollars. I'd like to pay them for that service. If they want to upgrade data services on their network I think they should charge those people who want to use it for those services. That's only fair. It goes back to the whole subsidy thing...why should me a "voice" user need to subsidize the "data" users if I won't be using that part of the Verizon network.

I appreciate your Sprint suggestion though. My cousin has 4 phones with Sprint with everything etc. and it really is a good deal to get all of the mobile numbers free no matter what network. My reservation is that Sprint in the past hasn't had the best voice network (which I obviously use a lot) for me in the past before I used Verizon. Maybe the coverage and call quality has improved but I haven't had the opportunity to test it. I believe Verizon still has the best coverage also is why I want to stick with their towers.

i see your point, but it's not going to get you anywhere. i've lived in san antonio (this time) since 2002. i pay a meter improvement fee of like 7.00 every month. that is 8 years of 84.00. i have yet to see a new meter. is it fair? no. is there anything I can do about it? nope. I don't even have a choice for my water. only one company. at least in the cell phone, cable/ satellite, internet/ home phone arena, we have a choice.

I am just saying you probably spend more than that on home internet anyway...and probably cable tv too. What's funny is that you can get all of those features on your phone and cancel all of the other crap you are paying for. I cancelled my home internet in exchange for data capable smartphones and guess what...I saved money. Like I said, most of the most reasonable phone plans already include data. On sprint you can have two phones with unlimited everything (including data) with 1500 landline minutes for 129.99. Plus you may be eligable for a discount depending on your employer. And I pay for my own phone bill...in case you were about to assume that I didnt.
Well as I said sprintgirl, and my point still stands, just because you feel its OK to be forced to pay for something you don’t need and you don't care about that for whatever reason, still, that doesn't give you the right to make that same decision for others.

Just to point out, I've been taking care of myself since I was younger then that as I had a Father who was diagnosed with MS when I was 4, and I have a brother with Downs Syndrome and a mother who barely did anything to help with any of that but that recently had a stroke that gave her so much brain damage she has to have 24hr care so your not the only one out there with troubles.

Simply put, as I've always said, "make it a choice", if you need it, or want it or want to waist all the money you care to waist on anything for that matter, then fine, do it all you want, that’s your “choice” and you have every right to make that decision if you so choose.

But if you read my post my point is to not make this "mandatory" as that removes that same right of choice from anyone else to have that “not” be the case if that is the choice they would like to make.

An as well that no one has the right to tell anyone what is right or wrong to spend their money on or not, or to make the decision for someone else what is sensible or not based on their own opinion.

So I'm sorry sprintgirl about your troubles but you just don't have the right to make that decision for others.

Just to point out that’s what I did, I paid over $520.00 for the TP2 delivered under the mtm plan an canceled afterwards and went with PagePlus but as I mathed it out, I still saved as even if I bought the phone the cheapest way under my 2 every new qualification with a new two year K for $90.00 I still would have had to pay a extra $750.00 for a data plan I don't need.

So with going with PagePlus, even at that cost up front, I still save hundreds over the two year.

But my gripe is, I had a V60 on their service for over 10 years so I way more then paid for that phone & my two new ever year supplement qualification and should have been able to get the TP2 for $90.00 but not had to pay a extra $750.00 over the next two years for something I don’t want or need just to get it.

But because of this mandatory $750.00 extra and all those who support it, all that was stolen from me so I had to fork over all that extra money up front just to minimize that as much as I could but in the end I am still be ripped off for way more then I should have.

So thanks to all who support this for helping to steal that money from me and from all the countless others who are in the same situation.

Sprint offers free roaming, therefore if you can't get a signal then you will use Verizon's towers to talk at no additional costs. So essentially sprint and Verizon have the same service.
