Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

I think WM7 is coming out at a perfect time. If they release a WM7 phone and give it the works, I mean specs like the HD2 on a newly released phone with newly released WM7. That is how you build hype. Now if they do that WM7 would have to live up to the hype, just be an amazing OS.

If they fail WM7 we can kiss WM goodbye. None is going to want to put a failed os on a good phone.

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

does android or iphone sync up with outlook? I have an iphone, but never tried it. That's a deal breaker to me if either doesnt. Outlook is part of my work life, and cant go without it.

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

Well Samsung has said it will no longer use WinMo for its phones
But its all about marketshare and customer satisfaction and WinMo has the lowest.
As of the third quarter in 2009, out of 41 million smartphones sold,
  • Symbian finished first with 44.6%
  • Research in Motion's BlackBerry OS finished second with 20.8%
  • iPhone finished third with 17.1%
  • Windows Mobile had 7.9%
  • Android is 1.8 percent but is estimated to grow to about 12%-15% by 2012
Also Android is free whereas WinMo costs the phone maker $25 per handset.

Did you read the article? It says 50% of Samsung's smartphones will be Windows Mobile (and 30% Android) this year. In 2012, 20% of their smartphones will be Windows Mobile. There is nothing in there that says they are getting rid of Windows Mobile altogether (other than the incorrect title).

It doesn't bode well.
For WM to go from 90% to 20% in 4 years (and to 50% from 90% in one year) and Android to be in 30% of their phones next year, it seems like thats the way its headed.
Motorola has dropped Windows Mobile from its line entirely in a switch to Android

I listen to a lot of podcasts (TWIT, etc.) and when they list smartphones, it's: iPhone, Blackberry and Palm Pre. Usually no mention of WM or Symbian!

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

im pretty sure in the next few year symbian will barely have any share once android/winmo/iphone kicks in full gear!!!!
RIM should update their interface... but overall its pretty good for business users!

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

WIndows Mobile is not dying, lol.

You SERO users need to understand that you're a drop in the bucket. If Spritn kicked everyone off of SERO it wouldn't even make a dent in the number of Windows Mobile users.

Seriously man, even in the USA that number is not big enough to be relevant. Sprint is a dying company, and the SERO users are a very small minority of their total customers.

And worldwide- are you kidding me? Sprint's SERO customers are nothing compared to all the people getting free HD2's on contract overseas.

Don't forget- on Verizon the Touch Pro 2 was sold out for like a month (or even longer) when it was first released. Peopl do actually like the Touch Pro 2. It's a great device. And this is coming from a guy who isn't on a SERO plan.

When Windows Mobile 7 is released, it will do well if they advertise it. It will do crappy if they don't.

Has anyone seen that Sprint commercial where they say something like "These people are using Sprint's 3 best smartphones..." and they go on to mention the Moment, some Blackberry, and the Pixi? No mention of the Touch Pro 2.

It's like Sprint (and other carriers) have totally abandoned the Windows Mobile platform. I think part of the reason for this is because of how easy it is to tether on Windows Mobile, and how many apps there are that use data. All of the carriers hate tethering, and Windows Mobile has it built in by default. SO the carriers have special ROMs made for them that have it removed. But anyone who cares about tethering and spends that kind of money on a device just comes here or xda and gets tethering enabled.

Carriers don't like this. They want to charge $30-$40 per month for tethering (see the Palm devices on Verizon). And since Microsoft wouldn't cave, the carriers black balled Microsoft.

Hopefully Microsoft stands their ground and continues to make tethering easy in future devices.
