You're correct that GSM definitely gets more devices, but you are wrong on all that other stuff. Data speed? LOL, give me a break man. AT&T has 7.2 meg HSPA right now, has been claiming they have the fastest 3G for years now (with no carrier refuting it), and was just rated fastest 3G by an independent gizmodo nationwide test.

And before that, in the days before the iPhone, AT&T was rated as having the least amount of dropped calls. There is absolutely no technological advantage for CDMA over GSM. You may have better GSM coverage in your particular area. But make no mistake about it, there are plenty of people who have better GSM coverage than CDMA.

And again, say it with ME here- MOST OF THEM HAVE 3G IN THE USA.

I don't have to go to country X, I just have to go to ebay. 100% of them work with voice and EDGE, and probably better than 90% of them work with 3G too.

The fact that you are arguing against this just shows who really has an open mind here.

It's only been recently that devices stopped having USA 3G support. And I mean very recently- as in the Touch Pro was the first HTC device that didn't have it.

And that's not an issue now anyway, since AT&T is now using the same 3G bands as Australia. So just about every device on that list works on AT&T's 3G, with maybe a handful that don't.

You can't grasp this, but it doesn't change the fact- GSM gets way better, and way more devices than CDMA. Period. And the LTE versus WiMax will be MUCH worse, because at least CDMA had some other major carriers besides Sprint.

Uh, I said there won;t be any devices to support WiMax because nobody else is using it. He then said WiMax is just CDMA with a different radio so there will be plenty of support.

I am not twisting things- he is wrong. Wimax has absolutely nothing to do with CDMA. Sprint still has CDMA, yes. So what the heck does that have to do with them getting a Wimax smartphone?

You can't disagree with a guy arguing for GSM who is on a CDMA network.

GSM will always dominate the market because technology comes first out of the rest of the world, dominated by GSM.

Re: Who plans to go HD2?

Honestly we've derailed and sidetracked so many times I don't even remember what the point is anymore. It has been a good debate and I've learned a few things along the way, but we really need to get back to the subject at hand.

PLEASE RESUME REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING

i didn't say wimax is the same thing, please show me that post. i said you are overexaggerating the fact that all they are going to have to do is put a different radio in the phone, its not a situation like gsm and cdma where they have to have completely different phones altogether.

Re: Who plans to go HD2?

Very true. Although I love carrier discussions, I hate that they all get placed into a different forum.

I would SO get the HD2 if it had a keyboard, because the rumor of it being updatable to Windows Mobile 7 makes me randy. But alas, a hardware keyboard is the best thing to happen to phones.

I remember when my MDA was the only one amongst the people I knew to have a phone with a keyboard!

Re: Who plans to go HD2?

basically you have gsm phones and cdma phones. its not going to be a situation where we have gsm, cdma, wimax, and lte. thats not the case. You will still have gsm vs cdma, what ever you want to use for the 3g coverage isn't going to implement a whole new line up of phones. on that situation this is my only point. if you thought i meant they were the exact same thing then i'm sorry.

Well just wait until it becomes more cost efficient to run phone connections on the data system. Then you'll have WiMax and LTE. But already, SaltyDawg has convinced me that WiMax might be the HD-DVD of mobile data technology. And we all know where that went.

Look man, the only difference between GSM and CDMA is the radio. They do NOT need different phones altogether, the only difference is the radio. So I guess you feel the radio is a pretty major difference then?

I think you see where I'm going with that.

We're talking about cell phones here. The radio is a pretty major part of it. Wimax is completely and totally different from CDMA. Sprint being CDMA won't help them get Wimax devices at all. It has nothing to do with it.
