Re: If I have one more person ask me...
Windows (all versions including mobile) has always had a problem with 'usability' - that is where Apple shines. My PPC does a lot of neat stuff.. but the keys by which you select function or issue commands differ from program to program and sometimes within programs themselves. If you enjoy bit twiddling and are a technogeek - you'll love Windows - if all you want is a simple device that is attractively packaged, performs reasonably well and is simple to operate, you'll love Apple.
I have an MP3 player that has far more features than iPod and is less expensive - but it never achieved the success of iPod because the packaging and human interface was not nearly as cool as iPod. The same rules apply to phones. |

Re: If I have one more person ask me...
I think you have hit the nail on the head with the usability statement. I have worked in IT really my entire professional life, I have done help desk kind of stuff and when you hear jokes about people asking where the "any" key is its no joke. There are users out there that are not capable of understanding technology. Apple excels at making technology accessible. I used to spend hours and hours trying to explain to Mac users how to do something on a PC that only took a second on the mac but may take 15 mins on a pc to accomplish the same goal. The IPhone is exactly the same. You turn it on and it does what it does. You push the safari button it opens up and your done, google maps ditto. With windows mobile we have all had to learn that google maps was even available and where to go get and how to install it etc.
The user that doesnt know where the any key is or thinks his CDrom tray is a cup holder isnt going to be the least bit interested in carrying that machine they dont know how to use on their desk around in their pocket too. I hope you all realize that we are the exceptions when it comes to the world of cell phones in general. I read a statistic not log ago that less than 10% of users that have cell phones that have camera's or music players ever even use the feature. |

Re: If I have one more person ask me...
I have seen many people with iphones, most of them completely ignorant of smartphones and think the 'highspeed wifi is the coolest feature ever!' and have no idea we are running EVDO Rev A on these Moguls. I honestly though have never seen another person on the street or in any business office that has a Mogul.. its like the best kept secret in phones.

Re: If I have one more person ask me...
It's true that the iPhone does what it does extremely well (since the hardware was designed around the software), and in this generation of "I want it and want it NOW" it's no wonder the iPhone is so successful. The sad thing is, we PPC users are being turned into the minority, and the Carriers take note of phone/account sales, not power users wants and needs. We will be lucky to see a device as advanced as the Mogul with keyboard in the future.... the MASSES simply don't care that much. Once it takes a little effort, most people will balk and go buy an iPhone, or lookalike.

Re: If I have one more person ask me...
There will be a place pocket pcs as long as there is that big company up and Redmond pushing them. Microsoft had a pretty good year in Windows Mobile sales. Plus throw in the open handset alliance and Android operating on similar hardware I think the future is bright.
You cant really compare the Pocket PC to a an IPhone in an apples to apples comparison. The IPhone is an Ipod with a phone. It is aimed squarly at the demographic that it is doing so well with. The PPC was not doing good in that demographic before the IPone came along. I personally feel it is wrong to even try to compare them to each other as they are really quite different devices. There is overlap which is why the comparisons exist but WM's real competition is mostly CrackBerries, Symbian based smartphones and soon to be Android based phones. We all know whe can do more on our phones. Some people just dont care to do more on their phones. |
