Do you have do you have USB debugging turned on or off? It should be turned ON. settings < applications < development < usb debugging. Also with it turned on make sure you don't have any missing drivers in device manager. Install HTC Sync if you have to (it will install the drivers for you, except for on 7).
i used flashrec on this hero.
usb debugging is checked.
ADB is driverless in DM.
i have windows 7.

Download the windows 7 drivers from here and get the driver for adb installed. Then you'll be good to go!
