Re: EVO Full Root No PC or ADB|Recovery|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing| for n00b's + Vi

Sorry if this question is stupid but I'm a little confused. If I applied the last OTA update from Sprint for my Evo can I root my phone? All I want to do is be able to tether.

not at this point in time. the devs are working on this new bump in the road. you will be able to root. just not by any known way right now.

so let me get this straight. The root will work on the new phones being shipped out and not the older ones that have applied the ota? I will be receiving my phone on the 5th and would like to be ready to root. Thanks

If your phone has not had the update applied, then yes. This process will work.
When you say "receiving" on the 5th, do you me by mail?
If so, there is a very good possibility that no OTA has been applied.
The phone was built/packaged long before the OTA came out. No one has had their hands on it to ruin it yet.

As soon as you turn it on and go through the setup of your accounts, you'll get a message that says there is an update available. Regardless of what that update is, SAY NO, then you'll be good to go.

Come back here, read the instructions for rooting and watch the video. Easy Peasy

Assuming Part I went ok.....
Are you sure you switched the PC36IMG files?
There are two different files for Parts I and II.
After completing Part I you need to rename that file. Fast suggests calling rootPC36IMG (but the name isnt important, just that you change it)-Step 2C

Then you must apply the mtd-eng file-Step 2D

Yes I have been doing that I now am redowning the eng-file again to see if there was something wrong with it? But I have followed the instructions to the "T". And I have tried it oth ways using the manners of install but I get the samething it does not ask me to updated it? I just cant complete the 2nd part of the install?

What way are you trying now? With or without PC?
Your are unzipping the eng-mtd file and putting that on your card, yes?
When you run the codes to flash the file are you seeing any errors? (2D)

Menu>Settings>About Phone>Software

You want your Software number to be 1.32.651.1 or 1.32.651.6

The first OTA changed it to 1.32.651.6

The latest OTA software is 1.47.651.1

So how are you getting yours? I heard a RUMOR that BB isnt letting units out of the store without updating-could be complete

So if the software number says 1.47.651.1 then i cant root my phone and all the hassle is gone to waste??

When letting it read the storage card it says that its too old..

Sorry, you're outta luck...for now. The OTA that got you to that software closed the exploit that is being used to gain root on the older software.

Two reasons to keep your chin up:
1) I'm confident someone will root the newest software.
2) Froyo is around the corner.

Hang tight, keep checking in here for new root methods.
