Yes, you'll be wiped clean.
Gmail is the simplest backup for contacts/calendar imo.
You will most likely need the recovery process. Very often rooting and staying on the stock ROM causes issues and you may not be able to use rooted apps.
You may need to flash the rooted version of stock, if not a custom ROM. It's been talked about a lot in this thread.

Thanks but I just used unrevoked rooting method, was so easy, and downloaded the tethering app and it works great. Didnt think it was that easy and quick. Hopefully I wont have any issues down the line but so far so good for now.

One of the benefits of full root is the fact that we can boot into recovery without a PC.
With your device powered off and not connected to PC, press & hold Vol Down as you press the Power button. The next screen that comes up is called hboot, that is not Recovery. You will get that screen with or without full root.
Using the volume rocker you can scroll down to Recovery and select that.

With full root the phone will reboot into Recovery and you'll see the Recovery menu.

Without full root the phone will reboot into a screen with a red triangle. There will be no menu. Your device will be waiting for you to plug in your USB and run the windows-recovery batch file to enter into Recovery.

Awesome, if unrevoked gives you what you need, then enjoy.
Just know that unrevoked is not considered true root. It will not allow you to flash ROMs or radios. I'm not 100% sure if it works with all rooted apps.
Just FYI. Hope it works for you.
Fast's tutorials are crystal clear and take you through step by step-if you ever get the notion to go for true, full root.

Think I messed up


So I held the power and down button and was a Hboot mode and I went to reboot mode it took me to a black screen with the red triangle. Should I restart from the beginning adn do everything over? If I should do I have to restore everything from stock and then try again and if I have to how would I do that??

I'm getting frustrated as heck. I have the first part down. I should be rooted after I update PC36IMG.zip and the phone reboots, correct? Upon restart I've tried two recovery methods, ROM Manager and clockwork recovery to flash a ROM, but it's neither method works. When I navigate to a ROM in ROM Manager I can select to flash it, then it asks if I want tor reboot in recovery, I click yes and nothing happens. With clockwork, I can manually select the rom in recovery mode and flash it. It shows that it is loaded, but upon reboot I'm still on stock. I don't think I'm sucessfully rooting the phone initially, but I don't know how else to do this.

It depends, are you in Part 1 or Part 2 Full Root? What you describe is normal if you've just completed Part 1. The next step would be doing the manual recovery. If you are trying to get full root with Part2 then you were not successful and need to start over at the part about disabling Nand protection.

Similar situation, you only completed Part1? Try to do the manual recovery outlined in the steps. What ROM are you on?

Woo-hoo! I've achieved root! I wiped the first recovery screen and then on the customer recovery screen then flashed and it worked. Previously I was just wiping on the customer recovery screen. Not sure why that made a difference but whatever!
