Here's what I said earlier:

You did Part I of toast's method for root, not unrevoked?
Full root is easy to verify, power off your phone. Hold Down Vol while you power back on.
When you select Recovery does it boot to the Red Triangle of You Ain't Got Full Root? (no Recovery menu options, just the triangle symbol)
Or does it boot into Recovery-Green font, menu options at the top of the screen?
If ya dont got it, start over. Watch the video.
EDIT: BTW-Dont have your phone connected to your PC when you test it.
One of the benefits of full root is the fact that we can boot into recovery without a PC.
With your device powered off and not connected to PC, press & hold Vol Down as you press the Power button. The next screen that comes up is called hboot, that is not Recovery. You will get that screen with or without full root.
Using the volume rocker you can scroll down to Recovery and select that.

With full root the phone will reboot into Recovery and you'll see the Recovery menu.

Without full root the phone will reboot into a screen with a red triangle. There will be no menu. Your device will be waiting for you to plug in your USB and run the windows-recovery batch file to enter into Recovery.

Hope that clears it up.
If it doesnt, there's always the video to watch.
Good luck.

I will address your question because this can be frustrating. I know this has been mentioned before, but it's worth repeating.

All the steps that require you to interact w/ the phone from the pc need two things working;
1 - You must have the drivers installed, if you installed HTC Sync, that's taken care of. (I used the HTC Sync that came w/ the card)
2 - USB Debugging must be turned on. Menu>Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging

As long as those two things are in place, it doesn't matter if you use "HTC Sync" or "Charge Only" when you connect the phone to the pc.
And with that being said:
1. There is a new HTC Sync update available grab it here
http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/

2. @Fast-enjoy Bruddah!!!!

Having trouble with file eng-PC36IMG.zip related to NAND protection. Has anyone else had a problem unzipping this file? I can't seem to be able to complete this step. Thanks for the videos.

You are not supposed to unzip it.
Rename it by removing the eng- from the file name and place PC36IMG.zip in it's zipped up form on your SD card as per the instructions and video.

OK, am I missing something? after doing part 2 and unlocking nand protection when I turn off my phone and turn it back on while holding vol. down it should load the custom recovery image (green screen with yellow letters) right? I've followed the directions step by step and am having no luck.

I have installed HTC sync, as I had it working before. And I have USB debugging on. My phone just doesn't recognize the USB connection. Ive got it plugged in to my PC now, its showing a solid light but when I run the
c:\evo-recovery\adb-windows reboot recovery it does nothing, window comes up and disappears.

Just installed the latest HTC sync and tried again, window came up saying something about adb being out of date?

You may be doing this but you didn't say it in your post so I just wanted to clarify-when you do as you described that brings up hboot. Don't be connexted to a PC for the next part. From there you can select Recovery via the volume rocker and pressing the Power button to select. THEN if you are fully rooted your phone will reboot into Recovery. If you're not fully rooted then your phone will reboot but stop at the screen with the red triangle waiting for you to connect to a PC.

@subzero-you can update your adb drivers, Google , but I think you already tried that?
Working today but I'll be happy to throw my brain at your issues this evening.
