Re: EVO - Root|Recovery|Nand Backup|Flashing for n00b's Instructions & Videos

ok i got it to work! i was able to remove the sprint bloatware following these commands here
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=15

for other people in similar situations, hope this will help
after its been rooted
i rebooted in recovery mode (down volume+power)
at the screen with the triangle and ! mark, i hit up up volume + power
i connected my phone to the usb and launched 'recovery-windows.bat'
then i opened up a new command prompt window and start entering the adb commands.

sadly the hosts.txt file didnt work. i still see ads. =(

If you haven't started any of the process yet, and you're on a completely stock rom w/ the OTA, if you don't mind, I'd like to walk you through the entire process by phone/chat?

Rom manager has been pumping out updates faster than I can download them. I think they are fixing stuff, but when I downgrade to stock, I still have the same issue w/ Rom Manager. I have 2 Evo's and they have the same thing happen, but I think it's because I've already rooted, upgraded, and then downgraded. The only way to be sure is to find someone that has a completely stock rom.

If rom manager doesn't work, I can walk you through the manual method, which I think is very easy anyways.

If we can do this, I wouldn't be able to call you until about 6:30PM PST (7:30PM your time in Colorado) but at least you'd get personalized help rooting and flashing your phone.
That would be cool. I get home from work about that same time, too, so it will be perfect.

I'm always antsy the first time -- never unlocked my Mogul, unlocked my Diamond and used Indagroove and Calkulin ROMs, then got a TP2 and actually started building ROMs with Calk's kitchen. It's a progression.

Your help will be greatly appreciated. And it's your call if you want to use chat or call me. I can PM you an alternate phone number, too.

Re: EVO - Root|Recovery|Nand Backup|Flashing for n00b's Instructions & Videos

so even if you uninstall and delete unrevoked from your EVO you still arent able to use this rom manager.... I always get the red triangle with the ! so im guessing i will now never be able to use this rom manager? or do i have to go thru the whole downgrading process??? cause it seems that the only reason to downgrade was to switch the OTA update from .6 to .1 i think and since the new root from toast is able to be loaded on the .6 then what now? Am i stuck never using the rom manager????? please let me know

I never ran unrevoked but I'm reading and reading....if I understand the process correctly once you uninstall unrevoked and reboot you are no longer rooted. So you would have to do the root method as outlined at the start of this thread.
The Evo has created a bumper crop of Droid n00bs so what we learned yesterday may not hold up today....
Like you said-I obtained root via toasts method from the .6 OTA, I did not downgrade. As per toast you *should not* have to downgrade. Does rooting and unrooting with unrevoked change that? I honestly don't know.
You do need to be rooted to use the ROM Manager, of that I am sure.
So IMO I'd just go ahead and root via toasts method. If it doesnt go then you would need to downgrade but you *should* be fine.
My post is two-fold-to help you out and to have anyone correct me if I'm wrong-I'm still learning and don't want to steer you wrong.
I wouldn't be offended if you waited for FastRX8 to chime in.
Good luck.

EDIT:btw ROM Manager is up to v1.8.8.6 so if your not on that version go to the Market and grab it.

Re: EVO - Root|Recovery|Nand Backup|Flashing for n00b's Instructions & Videos

Is there some where else I can try to download the file? I should not expand the zip file right? just copy the zip file to the root right ? Man seems so freaking simple, this is killing me! Thanks again for the help.

Where did you get it from the last time? I just DL'd again from Post #1 and it's 168MB like it should be.
Yes, once you have it extract NOTHING, just place the zip on the root of the SD.

edit. The file is in the correct place - it reads the file and says checking image and then says invalid image.

Not sure as mine went perfectly.
Sounds like your DL is being corrupted somehow. Maybe turn off virus protection/firewalls for a minute while you DL?
Could be a corrupt SD card too. Have not heard it talked about in Evo Land but it is something I've dealt with before in WM world.
Try a DL from xda, hang a sec.....(edit coming)

EDIT:
TOASTS THREAD

*This could be the EXACT same link that Fast has in Post #1* but it may be worth a go?
