how is it just better hardware when you're getting 4g? Sprint isn't charging for 4g so they just spent billions of dollars for no reason? its the samething when they went from 1 to evdo and evdo rev a, no charge. Sprint definitely wants and needs to recoupe the money and there are a couple of ways to do it. One way would be to charge for it directly, another way would be to put anybody who wants a new age device into a new age plan. its up to them and yes it is fair. the fact that you think your 10 year old plan should work with a new age phone is honestly unfathomable to me and completely over my head. I don't see your point at all and i didn't miss the point.

Wrong. There are plenty of CDMA carriers that will activate 3rd party phones. Sprint may be the only ones selling it, but the law says they have to unlock it if your account is in good standing, and there are plenty of carriers that will activate it.

if you had dialup service before then yes. i believe the issue is that the bandwidth that people will use with the newer phones wasn't priced into the older plans. picture mail used to be one megapixel at best. now the pictures are being emailed that are 5 - 8 mp and people stream music via pandora or slacker and watch youtube or slingbox a movie. these benefits were not priced into the old plans. remember, in business, value is what drives price, not only cost. if sprint wants to move people to the new plans by making the new handsets require them, why not? the plans are still lower priced than the competition.

sprints issue with losing customers is from them selling $9.99 add a line plans. i had 5 lines for 2 people because it was cheaper to open a new line so we could get a new phones before the 24 month upgrade. by rotating the lines, i was saving a lot more than the $10 per month was costing me and I would ESN swap lines to keep my # on the newest phone. now at $20, it takes away the benefit of doing this and i have cancelled 3 of the 5 lines. sorry sprint i know i was not the only person doing this.

As far as I know nobody on Sprint with an Android device currently has 4g, but they were forced to move to a higher priced plan to use their phone!

didn't they get visual voicemail (which sprint pays monthly or yearly subsriptions to have that service, standard voicemail is alot cheaper)
Also as i explained they aren't physically charging for 4g either so some people are getting a free upgrade, it goes hand in hand since sprint is the supplier for the phone and service. Not to mention as i stated before there was no price increase from 1x to evdo if you already had pic mail, so sprint just forked out $ there and gave free upgrades. the price/plan increase isn't only for 4g, its for supporting sprints whole network.

plenty of carriers like metro will activate it, but do you want their services? this is the point i'm trying to make to gullzway. if sprint came to you and forced you to change your current plan with your current phone that would be wrong, but requiring a certain plan for certain phones, there is nothing wrong with that because its up to you to decide if you want that phone or not.

But there are only 2 major US CDMA carriers. Verizon and Sprint. When you get a phone on their network, you must abide by their rules. Don't like their rules....go to someone else. It's that way for cable in my area. I don't want satellite, and Comcast is the only provider in my area for cable. I can either go without tv, or go by the rules Comcast sets. I'm planning to kick them to the curb, if that mobile hotspot app works great on the Evo.

It makes sense for me if a customer paid full price for an android/webos/etc phone to use it without a special plan. But, Sprint and Verizon don't allow that. Unless something changes, to open up the networks, prepare to upgrade to use new devices.

My plan is STILL available on Sprint, I just checked. 450 talk plan with $15 data plan. However these are no longer compatible with many phones including the touch pro2. Hmmmm , my Touch Pro2 works just fine on the Plan! How do you explain that?

Well I can see both sides of that argument so I am not going to jump in. I was just correcting the wrong point someone made that Sprint is the only carrier that the phone will work on.

I can understand charging more if you want extra services. So I don't disagree with you. But I think it's bull to charge extra if Sprint won't be providing extra services.

For example- if I am using Google Navigation, slingbox, and google voice (with visual voicemail) then why should I have to pay Sprint to provide similar services?

Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get it. Not because I think Sprint is the hands down cheapest (I still think T-Mobile is just as cheap, or even cheaper on some plans) but because I want the phone.

After the FCC starts regulating broadband, they need to get the wireless carriers in check next. They should all be forced to activate any device that will work on their network. No more of this "it has to be Sprint branded" crap. The phone I'm using shouldn't even be a consideration on how much my plan costs. I should just tell Sprint what services I want, and they tell me the price for each service. Just like I tell Directv what services I want, and they don't even ask what kind of TV I have.

Sprint and Verizon are the big ones, but there are smaller ones like Cricket and Metro that will activate any phone. There are also MVNOs like Page Plus (Verizon MVNO) that will activate any unlocked CDMA phone too.
