Re: Apache WM6.1 Kitchen CE OS 5.2.19716 (Build 19716.1.0.0) - UPDATED 20080308

I've really been reading into this and looking forward to the upgrade a very long time now but have failed 100% every way possible.

After much fighting on my laptop I was unable to get activesync to install (complete crap program right there.) It has been installed on one of my desktop PCs for a few years and always worked fine with several WM devices I've had, and suddenly decided it doens't want to connect to the phone anymore. The computer knows it has something plugged in, knows what it is, but activesync just searches and fails to find a device. The partial good news is that computer I have had success building a rom in but unable to flash to the phone due to non-connective issues. Tried seven different computers, all will connect with the phone but every single one has an error installing or opening buildos, or BuildOS has an error and fails to build the rom. This has completely worn me out and I don't know what to do from here. Since my one desktop had success in building the rom can I copy that over to another PC and do the flash? I've searched through every directory in the Builder program folder and am not able to locate the rom image.

Computer that had success with rom is a P4-3.0ghz w/2048mb dual channel ddr running a terrible misfunctioning copy of XP-Pro. Computer that fails on the build is an Athlon64 4000+ with 2048 ddr2 running XP-Pro64.

trojan in PPCGeeks_OEM.rar?!?!?!

This is cross-posted in the BuildOS thread as I initially thought it was a problem w/the updater. But it's not; There is a potentially very serious issue with the PPCGeeks_OEM.rar file.

For a couple of weeks, I've been trying to reflash my device with the latest kitchen. But every time I ran the updater, I was getting an error that the PPCGeeks_OEM file was missing. This was immediately after I watched the updater download it. I would watch the file appear in the download directory under \temp and then it would just disappear. There were no issues with the other .rar files.

I finally tracked this down to McAfee running on my system. It is a corporate version controlled by IT policies that do not permit turning it off, etc. Anyway, I discovered entries in it's log with timestamps occurring around the same times as I was running the updater complaining about a trojan that had been quarantined.

This morning, I checked my application event log and found a number of McAfee log events stating:
Quote:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: McLogEvent
Event Category: None
Event ID: 259
Date: 8/10/2008
Time: 9:21:43 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: ***********
Description:
The file C:\Program Files\PPCkitchen.org-save4\BuildOS\Kitchens\PPCGeeks_OEM.rar\EBOOK.HTM contains the Generic Downloader.ce Trojan. Undetermined clean error, deleted successfully. Detected using Scan engine version 5200.2160 DAT version 5357.0000.
I URGENTLY suggest that someone investigate this. If somehow, the PPCGeeks/BuildOS system is being used to infect PC's that are not adequately protected, then it could ruin a good thing we have going here.

I'd really like to understand why no one else has seen this. Is noone else running into this issue that has up-to-date AV?

Re: trojan in PPCGeeks_OEM.rar?!?!?!

This also happens if I manually download the PPCGeeks_OEM.rar file from the direct d/l links.

I strongly recommend that the file be removed from the site until this matter is resolved.

It's already been looked into and fixed (deleted ebook.htm). I'll get the update out soon.

The file in question can't possibly infect PCs (unless you extract it and intentionaly run it), as it only runs on the PPC.

You can find the rom in "my documents/buildos ruu", complete with ruu to use to flash it. Feel free to copy to another computer.

As to BuildOS, make sure .Net 2.0 SP1 or newer is installed, and you are using latest installer (http://ppckitchen.org/downloads/buildos.msi). BuildOS is known to work on 64 bit platforms. If you still have trouble, find me in the chat room.

Thanks much! Glad it was something simple.

I suspected that might be the case, but not knowing exactly everything that BuildOS does when it opens the file and processes its contents, I didn't want to take any chances. It's not impossible for a trojan in a rar file to infect a system, depending on its nature and how the contents are handled.

I will await the update!

Oh fantastic!!! I copied the built rom onto the A64 computer and burnt it without problem!! There is a problem with some of the software I selected, but this will take a few times to get how I like it. Otherwise works great! Pretty good performance improvement in a few areas over WM5!!

That's a stretch, but true. Fortunately, if there is someone who know's how that .rar is handled, it's me.
