I check my hotmail without windows live. When you enter the information, just type the email address wrong (I do @hotmaila.com) then enter pop3.live.com; smtp.live.com; outgoing uses authentication, and make sure your username includes the @hotmail.com. When it's done setting up (it won't move you to windows live) you can go back and fix the email address to the correct one.

That's if you don't want to use live.
