If you are that serious about a "longstanding stable business" and worried about making impressions, you should have your own email tied to your own domain and not depend on an email service that could pull the rug out from under you at any time.

There are plenty of places out there that will host your domain & email server so you can switch if you don't like them for whatever reason, while still keeping your same email address.

Chimmer, I think we agree. If it were not for the long standing use of my address I would change it and have my own domain name. I know some folks who have already done this. That may happen with me as well, but I'm not one of those really BIG guys out there or so vain about it, but I know some who are. I'm just trying to make that point, but I just don't think Sprint really understands the potential impact of their decision to not at least keep their outgoing server if only to provide a relay service.

I'm wasn't really pleased with my clients seeing an incoming email with the "From: someone@sprintpcs.com on behalf of someoneElse@nc.rr.com" by using Sprint's SMTP server as a pass through, so I pushed for a cleaner solution with RR, and got it. The FROM line above is actually fairly tolerable, at least the client knows you care about keeping in touch and responding promptly when it is important.

So if (really more like when) I upgrade my phone / service I will revisit the idea about having my own domain name (or changing service providers). I will be talking further with both the Sprint and RR folks to see if this can be resolved. The solution seems to me to be fairly strait forward. Implementing it might be another issue though.

Re: Sprint ending PCS Mail service 12/2008, outgoing mail on Mogul

It took some time, but I have been successful in being able to both send and receive emails from my new Palm Treo 800W. I actually held off upgrading until there was a solution. Maybe that made Sprint dig a little deeper. In working With Palm, Sprint, and Time Warner, outlined below is the solution that works for me. I have tested this with Sprint only on the Diamond, the Mogul and the Palm 800W. This solution is for a Windows Mobile OS based phone and NOT for a Palm OS based phone. Here are the steps I took:

- On my Palm Treo I click on the Email button, then select 'Setup E-mail"
- Fill in the fields below as they are presented:
E-mail address: myuserid@nc.rr.com Your fully qualified email address
Password: mypassword (The same login password you use from home (or webmail) to login to your email)
tap 'Next'

UNCHECK 'Try to get my email settings automatically from the Internet
tap 'Next'

Your e-mail provider: select 'Internet E-mail' from drop down
tap 'Next'

Your Name: Your full name
Account Display Name: How you want the account name to appear in the email application selection list (I used "Roadrunner")
tap 'Next'

Incomming mail server: pop-server.nc.rr.com
Account Type: select 'POP3' from drop down
tap 'Next'

User Name: myuserid@nc.rr.com Your full email address, not just the username portion before the @
Password: The same login password you use from home (or webmail) to login to your email
tap "next'

Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: smtp-server.nc.rr.com:587 (NOTE: use the ':' (colon) then port number for authentication, NO SPACES)
CHECK 'Outgoing server requires authentication' option
UNCHECK 'Use same username and password for sending e-mail' option
tap 'Next'

This brings up the "Outgoing Server Login" page. Here is where you provide the necessary authentication credentials
User name: myuserid@nc.rr.com Your full email address
Password: The same login password you use from home (or webmail) to login to your email
tap 'Next'

Automatic Send/Receive: select your preference for update frequency
Download messages: select your preference
tap 'Next'

Message format: select your preference
message download limit: select your preference
tap 'Finish'

As a final note to all users, the values I configured for both incoming and outgoing servers are based on my location and the server where my mail is stored. Your email may likely be stored on a completely different set of servers with different names, check the names used in the setup on your desktop where you receive your Roadrunner email. It is important to note though that the port number is added to the end of the name of your SMTP server (as shown above) separated by a colon (no spaces allowed).

Also, I have found that Roadrunner is expecting a fully qualified email address for the authentication USERNAME so if you just configure the username this may fail (did for me, and Time warner confirmed the correct format needed for my location). This is how authentication works in North Carolina. However, the implementation of username in other areas may not require the fully qualified name, instead only using the name before the "@" (high level vs. fully qualified). You may have to experiment a little, but for the most part what I have outlined should work.

Cheers,
John

That may solve the problem for my wife's Instinct (she uses it for personal use). I personally don't want to be bothered having yet another email address. Can you elaborate on how you set up gmail to look like Roadrunner?

under your settings select accounts and then you can add in the one you want it to look like. when setting up the email on your device just set up the out bound server like it was gmail. i do not have the settings for gmail at the moment.

Re: Sprint ending PCS Mail service 12/2008, outgoing mail on Mogul

I know most of this thread has been centered around Road Runner accounts but I do have some new work around info for sprint mobile email users that have COMCAST accounts. If some one wants to try it on their RR accounts and see if it works and give us some feed back that would help out. Try this as your outgoing server.

Re: Sprint ending PCS Mail service 12/2008, outgoing mail on Mogul

Hello All

I use a local ISp who houses one of our company emails, and the two other email accounts are GoDaddy.

The problem is sending out email from a SPRINT TOUCH MP6900SP on all three accounts.

I have used all three accounts set up as pop3 just like my desktop on my Touch for the last year with no problems and 3 weeks ago all accounts stopped sending email... NO I WAS NOT USING THE USERNAME@SPRINTPCS.COM or smtp.sprintpcs.com. I have talked to SPRINT everyday for the last 3 weeks and they want to push using gmail so for two days I used it and lost some business because when you send the email using gmail as the smtp it says USERNAME@gmail.com on behalf of [username@companydomain] which caused some to try and reply to the gmail account which caused me to loose some business.

I have went to my local provider which does one of our company emails and what they have found is the sprint ip addressed used to send emails has been blocked so they unblock and it work for 3 to 4 hours. Recheck and they are blocked again.

On another note I can delete the email account setup from the touch and then reset it back up on the touch and it will work for about 3 hours to maybe 2 days, then it will quit sending email.

I am at a loss if anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.

Re: Sprint ending PCS Mail service 12/2008, outgoing mail on Mogul

Old thread revived. Interesting comments being made. Being a MCSE/MCT and in IT for about 20 years, some of the things being done just don't make sense. I'm trying to be polite, so bear with me.

1. If you own a business, get your own domain with domain specific email. Seriously. I've had thousands of clients over the years and the one comment I keep hearing is "Wow, such and such uses @aol.com/@yahoo.com/@FREESERVICE.com for email? They must not have many customers." It's just not professional looking. Not to mention, you don't have any rights accorded you for that email address. It's not "yours". It's yahoo's or AOL's, etc. Be smart and protect your business and hard earned cash. There are people/companies out there who use those freebie email addresses to figure out what domain names they should squat on. If you can afford broadband for your business, you can afford your own domain and domain specific email.

2. Why the heck do some of you have multiple @'s for the same business email? Talk about confusing for clients. Or, maybe there's something to hide. I don't know, but it does make one think shady things are occurring.

3. NEVER use freebie email services for your business. At some point, you will have to change to another one. I can't count the number of freebie email hosts which have gone bye bye. Get your own domain, that way your customers will never have to change and you'll never have to worry about it.

4. If you don't want some company hosting your email, buy a small business solution. You can get a SBS2003/8 solution including the hardware with a five user license for under $1500.00. Anyone telling you otherwise is after your hard earned cash. Then the only thing you have to worry about is your Internet connection failing. Use the builtin POP3 conenctor and let someone like go daddy "host" your email and you have a fail over incase our connection goes down. I use this method since I run my consulting business from my home. When we lost power for 2 days this past summer, non of my mail was lost. When power came back, I brought my SBS2003 server back up, it sync'd with go daddy and then sync'd with my phone.

Windows Mobile directly syncs wirelessly with Exchange email, contacts, calendars, tasks. Everything you need. No reason to even connect the phone to a PC. No phone to PC sync is EVER needed. In fact, if you do both types of sync'ing, you'll have issues. I use the wireless method with many clients and they love it.

5. Email accounts on ANY mobile device are only as stable as the host is. Many free services limit the number of connections requests for a given time period.

6. Multiple accounts. I have 4 configured on my phone. I did not use the "Mobile Email" app. Honestly, I don't know what purpose it serves. Manually configure them yourself, that way you know it's done right. Not sure about "ME", but the way I do it, outbound email is specific to the account in use. By this I mean that when I'm looking at my outlook email and reply/new, the smtp server is my exchange server. When I'm looking at my personal RR email, outbound email goes through RR. Gmail, Yahoo, etc. All work fine, just configure them manually and don't use "Mobile Email".

7. RR email through WM is simple. Manually add the account, don't use "Mobile Email". You have to use FULL account name, Authentication and "Same name and password for sending email"). None of that complicated stuff posted above. I've been doing this since I got my HTC Touch back in March 2008.
