Re: Geocaching using GPS, tracing your steps

I use Reperion (free)
http://www.reperion.com/

Software:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-...treperion.html

Pretty nice software...you can start auto or invisable mode...send update with text auto or collect and send manual.

that's good to know. hopefully once sprint releases the official gps rom for the touch it'll work better. right now, the gps put together here isn't super fluid.

Best of luck. I will say that the mogul's GPSr isn't quite as good as my standalone Garmin but it is good enough not to carry both.

Hi Guys,

For Geocaching I use Tracky:

http://www.trackthisout.com/

It even allows you to search for caches wirelessly while out and about and is a truly fantastic peice of software for paperless caching.

Really? On paper, Tracky seems like a great app, and I love the caching features that allow you to search and download caches within the app, but I have had no luck actually using it for geocaching. It works okay for driving, but wasnt sensitive or accurate enough for walking around. I know its not a problem with the moguls internal GPS because GPS tuner shows that the Mogul can update very frequenntly and accurately.

I will give it another try with a different ROM.

What are you talking about static navigation?!? Ive never heard of that terminology, Ive used tracky just fine on my touch..works well.. Havent actually geocached with it yet, but i could.

EDIT: I tried a little geocaching test for my touch/tracky. I picked a waypoint on GE randonmly near my friends house. I inputted it into my touch and my Garmin Vista HCx, and went over there. I used tracky to get within 30' of the virtual cache, and i couldnt really get much closer. So I pulled out my HCx and zeroed in within 10' or so. My Touch still showed 30'. I waited about a minute and it dropped down into the 8-10' range which is about all you can ask for. If Beeline or GPSTuner works a little better than it could have been even better. But I could still cache semiconfidently with my phone if I wanted to, even with tracky.

Also note that I was getting 4 satellites on my touch in moderate canopy and 12+ on my hcx. I am sure that makes a difference

Re: Geocaching using GPS, tracing your steps

My Mogul consistently gets 8+ satellites everywhere. It also gets down to under 10 feet when I am close.

I usually get more sats than that as well. Perhaps it was an anomaly or perhaps the mogul has a better antenna.

I will do more tests in the near future, and try out beeline and gpstuner
