But here's my hunch: look at what MS has done in the past when they want to heavily compete in a market in which they are way behind. Specifically, think of one platform and their business model: XBox Their model was to sell the hardware below cost and woo developers (cue Ballmer, lol). That is, MS ate the cost difference on the XBox in order to gain market penetration. And by golly it worked. To put in perspective, MS did not even turn a profit on the XBox platform till mid 2008--six years after release and after they lost, literally, hundreds of millions of dollars. I'm not saying I know MS will do the same with Seven, but I sure as hell would not be shocked. They have the pockets to do it and they are stubborn MoFos when they decided to do something. Shoot, I kind of hope they do that. Put dream tech into the hands of ordinary people at below cost? That would crush their competitors or at least drain their resources. A wart of attrition, lol. You're right about LG wants the profit, but what I was suggesting was that MS subsidize LG, so they can lower the price without hurting their bottom line. MS eats the cost, LG can sell a $300 carrier subsidized phone instead of a $500 carrier subsidized one. But like I said, that's all just speculation/guessing/wishful thinking. We'll find out more in the next few months, I'm sure. I'm also skeptical about the LG screen resolution. We're working to confirm/dis-confirm this week. |

Re: WM7: LG Apollo, HTC Obsession and OS info
Well MS charges the handset makers for WM licenses (I believe the number is around $30/device). If they were going to "subsidize" this they would start by making Seven free like Android is and I believe they've made statements stating that they will specifically not do this.

Re: WM7: LG Apollo, HTC Obsession and OS info
I dunno, not the cost issue but the LG issue. I know for a fact that the last two phone releases from LG were reported with screen issues (Incite + Expo)
But, if this thing really is going to do what it says, IE the long battery life with a HD Screen, and media capabilities (This thing will replace my zune) and 30 hours audio playback then I think i will settle. |

This move away from the horizontal slide out keyboard is troubling to me. I hope we see some keyboards at Mobile World Congress.

Honestly I'm getting used to the keyboard on the Tour and it's not too bad once you get used to it. They spaced the buttons nicely enough. I think that will be fine.
