But here's my hunch: look at what MS has done in the past when they want to heavily compete in a market in which they are way behind. Specifically, think of one platform and their business model:
XBox
Their model was to sell the hardware
below cost and woo developers (cue Ballmer, lol). That is, MS ate the cost difference on the XBox in order to gain market penetration. And by golly it worked. To put in perspective, MS did not even
turn a profit on the XBox platform
till mid 2008--six years after release and after they lost, literally, hundreds of millions of dollars.
I'm not saying I know MS will do the same with Seven, but I sure as hell would not be shocked. They have the pockets to do it and they are stubborn MoFos when they decided to do something.
Shoot, I kind of hope they do that. Put dream tech into the hands of ordinary people at below cost? That would crush their competitors or at least drain their resources. A wart of attrition, lol.
