Omnia worth it?

I'm in the middle of beating Verizon's tech support into the ground regarding my XV6800. I had it replaced with a refurb with their "latest" ROM and software, and it was mostly unresponsive out of the box. Not bothering to load up the Sprint ROM I love so dearly (mostly because of the GPS) to see if it was any better, I called them back.

...and they're out of stock.

So I'm talking to my business rep today. That said, is the Omnia worth it as a replacement? I know it has double the RAM of the xv6800, but 128MB still isn't as much as I'd like. I like the TouchPro, but I'm tired of big/clunky.

Is the Omnia the best WinMo device that Verizon has on the shelves right now? If you absolutely couldn't wait, would you get one?

In my opinion, it's the best WinMo device Verizon carries. The combination of available memory, great camera, 8 GB on board, nice screen and overall reliability is hard to beat. I had a chance to choose between the Touch Pro and Omnia, tried both, and found the Omnia to be, hands down, the best for my purposes. The emerging ROMs are just icing on the cake.

I'd get one again in a heartbeat.

When I picked up the Touch Pro, I could just feel it weighing down my belt. My XV6800 has a hi-cap battery, and I could easily beat someone to death with that brick.

The Omnia felt good in my hands. The portrait/landscape flip looked a little kludgy, but I'm sure that's fixed in some of these ROMs I'm seeing.

If your two conditions are Windows Mobile and Verizon, I think it's a 'no-brainer.' The only plus with the Pro is the keyboard, but I had one and it was very clunky and awkward to text with...expecially with one hand. The Omnia is faster, has more storage, and bigger screen (although not as hi-res), and is an overall better phone IMO.

I just made the switch from a VX6800 to the Omnia. I like the Omnia so much better... and I loved my VX6800 passionately. I posed the same query as you last week. My thread is here:

As noted, the Omnia is thinner, lighter, has a bigger screen, better graphics, is aesthetically very pleasing, has tactile touch feedback, CC20 ROM enables GPS and the ability to flash to cooked ROMs, 5.0MP camera which takes great pictures, and on and on. I kept my VX6800 as a spare in case, God forbid, anything happen to my Omnia.

I've only owned my Omnia since late last week and I can tell you already, unequivocally, it's the best WinMo device I've ever owned. I was tempted to go with the Touch Pro also but this device is so much smaller and lighter. Even though you are giving up some RAM to the TP, it's still a very fast device, especially with a cooked ROM.

Can you tell I really like my Omnia?

edit: the *only* gripe I have with the Omnia is the proprietary connector. I mean, c'mon, give us a standard mini-USB connector.

This being my first WinMo phone I have nothing to compare it to except my LG 8600. That said, 24GB (internal plus µSD) is a tremendous amount of storage for movies, games, etc.

The GPS is unlocked on the many ROMs floating around on this and other forums. It works great and gives you a choice of the GPS apps. No more VZNavigator.

Those ROMs also keep mem use to a minimum, so don't let the 128MB worry you. My ROM started with 133.42MB and currently is 115.40MB. That's with a lot of apps and WM6.5. I've never run out of storage or program memory.

I haven't regretted moving up to the Omnia.

I'm trying to find out "what's in the box". I found a post over at another forum with a shot of everything that comes with the phone, and see a USB cord, but can't see if it is for "charging only", or for data. I see the proprietary charger, which looks strangely like the charger I have for my old SCH-U740.

edit: I just found a review off of the stickies, and it says it supports USB2.0. Is that through the proprietary connector or a straight plug? I would view the vids, but I have youtube,etc. blocked at work.

It supports USB 2.0 but through the proprietary connector. There is no mini usb, only the connector. Out of the box it comes with the usb connector, wall charger, headphones which must be connected to another funky adaptor, etc. Overall the phone is incredible however, especially with the ROM's here.

Edit: and although you can charge via the usb connector, it's slow and only can charge through activesync, not by a usb charger, like an ipod can.

I have emailed my rep, so hopefully I'll have one this week. I'm betting it's the same connector that the SCH-U740 uses, and luckily I still have all of my adapters (headphones included). I'll check with Verizon before I just go plugging it in, though. Thanks for the info.
